I think part of the fun for those people that do it is knowing that it annoys several posters when they make the pyramids.

I didn't want to put it there. That seems so impersonal. Besides, sometimes I might want to cry.

Hey, Annie!

If you do put it in the signature field, you won't ever have to remember to add your smiley. On those rare occasions that you want to cry (or anything else), you can uncheck the box at the bottom of the posting page that says "Attach a signature (signatures can be altered via the UCP)" and insert the desired emotion just as you do now. People should be more aware of that checkbox, as a silly signature can negate the intentions of the poster in some threads (e.g. condolences).
