LS 9/3 -- Warm-Up Game

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Fri Sep 03, 2010 5:00 am

September 2010 Lyrically Speaking begins... RIGHTNOW! *whoosh, gong*

We're starting this month with a warm-up game that I call...

WHERE WORDS CASCADE LIKE RAINBOWS TUMBLING FROM THE SKY

With so many people worried about not scoring a lot of points this month after I let it slip where the majority of the songs will come from, I figured that we should start the month with an entire day of songs that are not so recent. How "not so recent" are we talking about exactly? How about before 1960? That's right, all of the songs today are guaranteed to be at least 50 years old.

1 point per title and 1 point per artist. Many of these songs have been performed and recorded by multiple acts. You need to provide only one per song. This game ends Tuesday at 4 PM.

A little later, I will PM a random person to pick Monday's game.

1. There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river, don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a-droopin' on down

2. Hey, please don't bring your lips close to my cheek
Don't you smile or I'll be lost beyond recall
The kiss in your eyes, the touch of your hand makes me weak
And my heart, it may grow very dizzy and fall

3. I want some [title]
Mister Florist, take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away

4. The rumble of the subway train
The rattle of the taxis
The daffy-dills who entertain
At Angelo's and Maxie's

5. The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you

6. Yes, ma'am, we've decided
No ma'am, we ain't gonna hide it
Yes, ma'am, you're invited now

7. I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me

8. If you wanna do right by your appetite
If you're fussy about your food
Take a choo choo today, head New England way
And we'll put you in the happiest mood

9. So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I am so in love with you

10. Yeah, the way you treatin' me, baby
Honey, you gonna drive old me insane

11. Out in the West Texas town of [title]
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

12. You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four
Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore
Dinner in the diner
Nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham an' eggs in Carolina

13. Stars and moon so bright
Still I'd turn for light to you

14. [title] is for the very young
Every star's a wishing star that shines for you
[title] is all the seven wonders
One little kiss can tell you this is true

15. Love me sweet
Never let me go
You have made my life complete
And I love you so

I can't guarantee I'm going to play all month but it's a slow day, so I'll give the warm-up a try.

4. The rumble of the subway train
The rattle of the taxis
The daffy-dills who entertain
At Angelo's and Maxie's

The Lullaby of Broadway, Ezekiel Steifel's sing-along

6. Yes, ma'am, we've decided
No ma'am, we ain't gonna hide it
Yes, ma'am, you're invited now

Yes, Sir, That's My Baby, as sung by my father, Barnabas Rumspringa, to his horses.

7. I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me

Night and Day, Jonah Weilbrunner's sing-a-long

11. Out in the West Texas town of [title]
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

El Paso, another Zeke Steifel tune. This one really livened up the sing-along at his place.

Dinner in the diner

Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Bette Midler. When I was in my teens, I accidently listened to a transister radio that Silas Braunkuchen hid under the seat of his buggy. I confess that I listened accidently more than once.

Absolutely! In fact I'm an Asimov fan all the way. I once set out to collect every book he ever wrote but gave up because he was too prolific.

3. RED ROSES FOR A BLUE LADY -- VIC DANA, among others
4. LULLABY OF BROADWAY -- DICK POWELL in 42nd STREET
5. EARTH ANGEL -- THE PENGUINS
6. YES, SIR, THAT'S MY BABY -- EDDIE CANTOR
7. I'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN -- ELLA FITZGERALD
8. SHOO FLY PIE AND APPLE PAN DOWDY -- DINAH SHORE
9. SECRET LOVE -- DORIS DAY (from the movie CALAMITY JANE)
10. NOPE
11. EL PASO -- MARTY ROBBINS

13. IF (they made me a king) -- PERRY COMO (my favorite version is by THE PARAGONS)
14. APRIL LOVE -- PAT BOONE
15. LOVE ME TENDER -- ELVIS

Notes:

1) Chattanooga Choo Choo is Boonie's favorite Big Band song. It has something to do with an old tom-Tom Swifite joke that ended, "Pardon me, Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes."

2) The Perry Como version of If was my aunt and uncle's song. It was one of my favorites when I was a little kid.

I thought of that too. I bet they're pretty high.

Spoiler

Mack the Knife-Bobby Darin

2. Hey, please don't bring your lips close to my cheek
Don't you smile or I'll be lost beyond recall
The kiss in your eyes, the touch of your hand makes me weak
And my heart, it may grow very dizzy and fall

And To Think, I Only Paid 30 Bucks For This-John Doe and the Don't Tell My Wives

3. I want some [title]
Mister Florist, take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away

Red Roses For a Blue Lady-Wayne Newton/Vic Damone (although both of those versions were after 1960)

4. The rumble of the subway train
The rattle of the taxis
The daffy-dills who entertain
At Angelo's and Maxie's

Lullaby of Broadway-Doris Day

5. The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you

Earth Angel-The Penguins

6. Yes, ma'am, we've decided
No ma'am, we ain't gonna hide it
Yes, ma'am, you're invited now

Yessir, That's My Baby-Many singers, all of whom would likely come up on the "dead" side of the ledger in a game of "D or A".

7. I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me

I've Got You Under My Skin-No one can touch Frank Sinatra's version

8. If you wanna do right by your appetite
If you're fussy about your food
Take a choo choo today, head New England way
And we'll put you in the happiest mood

Old Cape Cod-Patti Page?

9. So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I am so in love with you

Secret Love-Doris Day

10. Yeah, the way you treatin' me, baby
Honey, you gonna drive old me insane

Gimme That New Contract-Darrelle Revis

11. Out in the West Texas town of [title]
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

El Paso-Marty Robbins

12. You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four

Dinner in the diner
Nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham an' eggs in Carolina

Chatanooga Choo Choo-Glenn Miller & his Orch.

April Love-Pat Boone

WHERE WORDS CASCADE LIKE RAINBOWS TUMBLING FROM THE SKY

1. There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river, don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a-droopin' on down

"Mack the Knife", Bobby Darin or Frank Sinatra

I started laughing when the first act from this year's MDA Telethon performed "Mack the Knife". Good to see that somebody other than the WWTBAM writers are stealing my ideas.
:P

2. Hey, please don't bring your lips close to my cheek
Don't you smile or I'll be lost beyond recall
The kiss in your eyes, the touch of your hand makes me weak
And my heart, it may grow very dizzy and fall

"All or Nothing at All", Frank Sinatra

This was Sinatra's very first #1 hit on the Billboard charts... and this was way before the existence of the Billboard Hot 100. He did this tune way back in 1940. Think I can't go older than 1940? Think again.

3. I want some [title]
Mister Florist, take my order please
We had a silly quarrel the other day
I hope these pretty flowers chase her blues away

"Red Roses for a Blue Lady", Vaughn Moore, Bobby Vinton, Vic Dana, Bert Kaempfert, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Wayne Newton, Guy Lombardo, Al Martino, Al Hirt... just about anybody who could carry a tune in the 1940s and 1950s did this song.

4. The rumble of the subway train
The rattle of the taxis
The daffy-dills who entertain
At Angelo's and Maxie's

"Lullaby of Broadway", Dick Powell, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Tony Bennett, or the Dorsey Brothers

I don't know if anybody named Ezekiel Steifel ever sang this song, but I'll take Emily's word for it. Either way, this song was first recorded in 1935... but I can go even older than this. BTW, if you said "The Lullaby of Broadway", you might've missed a big bonus opportunity. More about that in a minute.

5. The one I adore
Love you forever and ever more
I'm just a fool
A fool in love with you

"Earth Angel", the Penguins, the Crew-Cuts, New Edition, or Aaron Neville

If you got as far as knowing that Michael J. Fox sang this song in Back to the Future, I went ahead and gave you the artist point.

6. Yes, ma'am, we've decided
No ma'am, we ain't gonna hide it
Yes, ma'am, you're invited now

"Yes Sir, That's My Baby", Ace Birgode, Eddie Cantor, Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, or Rick Nelson

This is the oldest song ever used in a Bored game hosted by me. This song goes all the way back to 1925. I looked it up, Frank. Al Jolson did indeed do this song, so no worries. That's good news for Krox, as well.

7. I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me

"I've Got You Under My Skin", Cole Porter, Virginia Bruce, Frank Sinatra, the Four Seasons, Ella Fitzgerald, or Michael Bublé

8. If you wanna do right by your appetite
If you're fussy about your food
Take a choo choo today, head New England way
And we'll put you in the happiest mood

"Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy", Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, or Stan Kenton

9. So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I am so in love with you

"Secret Love", Doris Day, Connie Francis, Tommy Edwards, Freddy Fender, or George Michael

10. Yeah, the way you treatin' me, baby
Honey, you gonna drive old me insane

"Please Love Me", B.B. King

A rare LS moment: Everybody missed this one.

11. Out in the West Texas town of [title]
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

"El Paso", Marty Robbins

12. You leave the Pennsylvania Station 'bout a quarter to four
Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore
Dinner in the diner
Nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham an' eggs in Carolina

"Chattanooga Choo Choo", Glenn Miller, Cab Calloway, the Andrews Sisters, Bette Midler, or Bill Haley

13. Stars and moon so bright
Still I'd turn for light to you

"If", Perry Como

14. [title] is for the very young
Every star's a wishing star that shines for you
[title] is all the seven wonders
One little kiss can tell you this is true

"April Love", Pat Boone

15. Love me sweet
Never let me go
You have made my life complete
And I love you so

"Love Me Tender", Elvis Presley

Remember how I said in the rules that there would be hidden bonuses, both announced and unannounced ones? This first game of September had one of each. The announced hidden bonus could be found at the bottom of the Rules & Format thread. If you replied to that thread as I instructed, you earned 2 Leo Sayer Points. The unannounced hidden bonus was insinuated by the title of this game. That was a line from the Electric Light Orchestra song "Secret Messages". And guess what? There was a secret message here, and it could be found in the 15 song titles. I even dropped a hint about this on Thursday when I replied to Marley's post in the Copy Cat promo thread:
I won't get into the specifics right now, but tomorrow's game definitely has your name on it.
If you took the first letter of each title, you came up with the secret message "MARLEY IS SPECIAL". If you spotted it, you earned another 3 Leo Sayer Points.

Bonuses/Penalties (revised on 12/11/10)

Bob#s, earendel, elwood, Frank, Marley, and mntetn all earned 2 Leo Sayer Points for replying in the Rules thread.

Frank earned 1 Leo Sayer Point for asking "Who is J.J. Kale?" I probably should have penalized him for asking that question, but the question made me laugh, so it qualifies as a humor point.

T_Bone earned 1 Leo Sayer Point for humor.

Marley earned 1 Leo Sayer Point because he is special.

Finally, I'm not one to air out another person's dirty laundry, but what the heck? I haven't posted to or even read this Bored since my heart attack several weeks ago... and after today, I'm never posting to or reading the Bored again, so I'm gonna call a spade a spade without any concerns over retribution.

I was able to tolerate all of the roasting and even the disrespect that was aimed at me in the past, but what people like SportsFan68, Fanny, littlebeast13, and Estonut (a quartet who will henceforth be known collectively as "Fox News" and individually as "Fox Sports", "Fanny Foxe", "Little Foxes", and "Foxnuts") have engaged in over the past few months--particularly during the couple of weeks when I was in Louisville and Cincinnati--is way past disrespect. It is outright slander, blasphemy, and persecution.

After my family and I got home from Cincinnati on September 18, I read through nine days' worth of threads and Lyrically Speaking answers that I was unable to read while busy with more important business. What I read was nine days' worth of dishonest, obscene, and heartless comments directed at me. As I read each slur and repeated each slur to April, my blood pressure and stress level rose. After about a half-hour of slander, I stopped breathing... and everything after that is a blur.

When I regained consciousness, I was in a hospital room. A doctor told me that I suffered a heart attack. Even more horrifying, he told me that when the paramedics arrived at my house, I had to be resuscitated because I had died. Thank God that I am married to a strong woman of God... and thank God that I live less than two miles from a hospital. Otherwise, I most likely would have died permanently.

I really did not want to return to the Bored because my blood pressure and stress level go up any time I even think about the Bored, but I didn't want to leave this game unresolved. I can't afford to have another heart attack in the condition that I am in, or any condition for that matter. My family and my church are way more important than some meadow muffin message board. It's just not worth risking my life. It is for that reason that I have been an ex-member of the WWTBAM Bored since I left the hospital.

Fox News must be proud of themselves for successfully getting me off of the Bored. They must also be proud of themselves for almost successfully killing me and making my wife raise three kids (plus one on the way) all by herself. May God have mercy on their souls.

If I could assess bigger penalties in this game, I would... by my own rules prevent it. Nonetheless, anybody who is as ignorant, stubborn, arrogant, selfish, disrespectful, dishonest, obscene, shameless, heartless, in denial, blasphemous, and religiously intolerant as Fox News are deserve the maximum penalty allowable. Therefore, any points, bonuses, and penalties that Fox News received either as themselves or as Merry Men during the September
2010 LS have been discarded. They have been replaced by the maximum allowed penalty (5 Justin Effin' Bieber Points) per person per game day. Since I was able to host only 11 of the intended 21 games that month, that comes to a maximum low monthly score of -55.

The level of disrespect that Fanny Foxe, Little Foxes, and Foxnuts have displayed has not been just toward me, but also toward my longtime friend Jordan (heelsrule1988). So as an additional penalty for these three, I am giving Heels 5 non-competitive unofficial points for every 5-point penalty that I assess on Fanny Foxe, Little Foxes, and Foxnuts. I consider this a token of my appreciation to Heels for somehow maintaining his sanity (and his health) amidst all of the unjust and unnecessary disrespect from Fanny Foxe, Little Foxes, and Foxnuts that he has had to put up with over the past couple of years. Fox Sports has never been as hostile toward Heels as the other three have, so Heels will not be given any points at Fox Sports' expense. This is certainly a dramatic change from my original rules, but then again, everything changed when the deliberately destructive actions and behaviors of Fox News caused permanent physical damage.

Oh, before I go, I should also mention the other members of this forum who have displayed unjust and unwarranted disrespect toward me over the years. While their actions has not been as deliberately destructive as those of Fox News, I cannot leave their actions unaddressed. These people are Appa, BackInTex, Chad, Confessor, peacock, silvercamaro, and Spock. Another thing that these seven people have in common is that none of them has ever played Lyrically Speaking (except for BiT, who played only one day of LS--interestingly, my last game). Assessing any penalty points to any of these people in a game that none of them has ever really participated in would be completely... "point"less. So in lieu of penalties, I will give each of them simply a virtual slap on the wrist and a virtual kick in the pants.

So the next time that Fox News or anybody else think about slandering or persecuting somebody, they should remember this: Lying and being disrespectful may be easier than telling the truth and being respectful, but the price of lying and being disrespectful is too high for anybody to make it worth the cost. I triple dog dare one or more of them to fly out here to Lexington and just try to prove that I am not a pastor. When they come face to face with my fellow ministers and congregants at my church and try to foist their lies about me on them, I would pay cash money to watch my fellow ministers and congregants point and laugh at Fox News. Of course, Fox News would never come here to Lexington and face the truth because they are sleazy propagandists and cowards.
There, I told the truth about everything and I don't care who the truth offends. It won't be my problem because, after I post the final scores, the WWTBAM Bored will be dead to me.

I feel a whole lot better after having said all of that. It takes a lot of unneeded pressure off my chest.
