Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk

That is so wrong

From the NYT Bestseller list
8 SQUIRREL SEEKS CHIPMUNK, by David Sedaris. (Little, Brown, $21.99.) The humorist looks at human nature through stories with animals as characters.

I love David Sedaris! I may have to check this out. :)

When I went to pick up Dad for lunch last Wednesday, Sister #4's Entertainment Weekly was delivered, and while waiting for him to get ready I flipped through it. Saw the cover of the book in the little review they had and stopped dead in my tracks.....

I wonder if this story took place in Colorado......?

8 squirrels? And one chipmunk? That's gotta be illegal in most states.

I received this book as a gift from Santa Claus this Christmas (At least I think it was Santa Claus.... the initials on the tag were definitely S.C.), and finally got around to reading it last night. Brought it to read during downtime at Bingo and finished it off before I went to bed last night......

The title of the book is merely one of the 15 or so short stories in the book.... and when I say short, I mean like maybe 7-15 pages, with medium sized print, and illustrations! While the stories aren't long, they do pack a punch. The stories are anthropomorphic in that the animals take on the characteristic of humans.... however they are shown against the backdrop of real world situations (On a farm, in the forest, as pets in a human family's house, etc... think "Animal Farm") Sedaris takes advantage of the animal angle to poke fun at everyday situations, behavior, and opinions.... the references of which have just the right degree of subtlety as to reward the reader for making the connection, but without sticking out like a sore thumb...

The book is very clever, funny, and many of the stories have rather dark undertones. There is coarse language, non-politically correct references, and a fair share of unapologetically graphic scenes.... some of which are even captured in the remarkable illustrations done by the same guy who illustrates the Olivia series for children. This is definitely not a book for kids though.....

Best of all for me is the fact that it is a quick read. I polished it off in about 2 and a half hours, so a regular reader could probably plow through these modern fables in 2 or less. I highly recommend it, but it could have used more squirrels.....

It's the ES avatars that include Sprots that I hate. The ones with Matias aren't that bad, or rather, his parents haven't threatened me with nuclear weaponry yet.

All LB has to do is promise that there will be no more ES avatars with Sprots in them, and I will start posting Matias photos again immediately. That means no more depictions of ES and Sprots of any kind, not just avatars.

How would you expect me to make a countdown with no Sprots/ES avatars? They are the clear-cut Bored favorites.....

I guess since we are getting no fresh Matias pictures, ES will just have to go back to working on that avatar version of "The Kiss" he was planning.....

Beast, I read that book this week, too. I was a little disappointed only because I've read all of Sedaris's other books and I guess I expected more. It was like eating a Frito when I expected a naked pita chip.
