The Squirrels put in a lefty (Alex Hinshaw) to face a lefty pinch-hitter in the 9th spot to get the third out, but he promptly issued a walk. Then came the top of the order, a .400 hitter, and apparently no more relief. The pitcher who started the ninth has a good name: Mitch Lively. Listed as drafted by the Colorado Rockies organization.

I forgot about a make-up this afternoon of a rained-out game. The Squirrels played a 7-inning game at 5pm and won 6-2. Seven innings is standard for rainout-caused doubleheaders in the minor leagues. Now they are playing the regularly scheduled game, now truncated to seven innings, and trailing 3-2 after four.

They should know that "Squirrels Gone Wild" isn't good on the mound after walking in the deciding run last night. This time it was Clayton (Iben Browning) Tanner hitting a leadoff batter who came around to score the winner in the 6th. Tanner has a 6-10 record this year as a starter. So a doubleheader split leaves the Squirrels one-and-a-half peanuts behind the Bowie Baysox who lost their game. Richmond and Bowie continue to fight for the wild card. Harrisburg continues to roll even with their future MLB star Bryce Harper on the disabled-list.

ALTOONA, Pa. --Francisco Peguero drove in Darren Ford twice and David Quinowski sparkled in relief to lead Richmond to a 6-2 win over Altoona in the first game of the doubleheader Tuesday. The Flying Squirrels (69-60) lost the nightcap to the Curve 4-3 on Quincy Latimore's RBI single in the sixth.

The Squirrels allowed five runs in the 7th to lose 6-2 and drop 3 of 4 at last-place Altoona. The Altoona Curve avoided mathematical elimination from the race (the toaster). Bowie is winning and would be 2.5 games ahead for the wild card with 12 games to play.

Bowie: Four games at Erie, four vs Altoona, four vs Erie
Squirrels: Four games at Akron, four vs. New Britain, and four more at Altoona to close the season.

Akron Aeros are right behind the Squirrels so this series is crucial. The Squirrels could remain in the hunt, or they could fall behind Akron making Akron the main challenger to the Bowie Baysox for the wild card.

Squirrels win!!! Just held on to a 4-3 win in Akron, Ohio, after almost seeing a three run lead bleed away over the last three frames. Meanwhile the Bowie Baysox did blow their 3-run lead in the late innings and lose 4-3. So Nutsy and co are only 1.5 behind.

Game 2 at Akron: Squirrels surrender 5 in the first inning, trail 7-2, come back to within 7-5 but that is as close as they get. Bowie lost at Erie for the second straight night, this time to a five-spot in the eighth, so the difference is still 1.5 games.

Squirrels win one of their most exciting games of the season as they come from 2-0 down and hold it at 2-2 until the top of the 10th when they went ahead courtesy of a single, steal, and another single. Then they overcame a leadoff 2B error to strand the runner and win the game. Bowie Baysox lost so there is a 1/2 game difference.
(A recent day when the Squirrels lost while the Baysox were rained out is the 1/2 game difference in the Baysox favor. I do not think the Eastern League makes up games at the end of the season so the Squirrels will have to win the wild card outright over the last nine games)

The Squirrels gave that game right back this afternoon (along with the 2-0 first inning lead they had). Akron 5, Squirrels 2. The Bowie Baysox rallied to win their game so it is a Baysox 1.5 game lead for the wild-card with eight games left.

Squirrels: 4 games home vs New Britain (likely playoff-bound opponent) then four at Altoona (last place team recently "toast" -ed)
Baysox: 4 games home vs Altoona, then four home to Erie (also a losing team). Given Bowie's schedule, it will be an uphill climb for the Squirrels.

Squirrels can climb high trees. Climbing up a hill should be no problem.

Coming up on Animals After Dark, New Britain Rock Cats and Squirrels Gone Wild! Tuned into the third and heard the Squirrels get away with two walks and a wild pitch to only give up one run, then get the run back on a groundball in the bottom of the inning.

The Squirrels do have a special rally mascot, a pig! Stay away, Angry Birds!
Monday night's homestand opener features Bark in the Park Night presented by Petco, Richmond Animal Care & Control in Conjunction with Public Utilities, and Lite 98! Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to The Diamond and tickets can be purchased for special "dog-friendly" seating sections. Doody Calls will provide pet waste-pick-up bags for dog owners.

After a strong night in a win last Thursday, tonight's stinkerballin' southpaw got an early shower with 0 out in the 2nd, charged with a grand slam and two other earned runs. Rock Cats roll 12-3 vs the Squirrels. Despite the disaster, the Squirrels are only 1/2 a peanut behind the Bowie Baysox, who lost 4-2 at home to the Altoona Curve.

New wild-card leader... Richmond Flying Squirrels!

The Squirrels managed this with a 3+ inning spot-start from an A-ball callup, Justin Schumer, (this is the rotation spot left open when star Eric Surkamp got the call for his MLB debut in SF). The hero was middle-reliever Hector Correa, who got the win.
Squirrels win 8-4! Baysox were 5-hit by the Curve, 2-0!

SC was right, Squirrels can climb high trees. This means Squirrels have (Ryan)
