 , , and  again.

But to be clear, you did get a video interview? If so I guess that changes things - I thought the video interview was a guarantee for the :D card.

Yes, I got a video interview, but other BBs have gotten those and still received Sad Cards, so it's never been a guarantee. What is still a guarantee (at least with the limited data we have) is that anybody who doesn't get a video interview is sure to get a Sad Card.

They could save on postage by handing them out as auditioners walk out the door. :|

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

No, it's my loss. I'm the one who's going to have to sit through another season, watching more contestants with great stories get on instead of me.

Holy shit. Make that "Holy Shit". I just found this thread (I thought it was going to be, uh, about the heat wave), was revving up my congrats, & now this. Like others I was convinced the video was a lock, otherwise why do they bother with it (the price of video-taping has gone down?!).

Well, now you just have to kill them at J!. Figuratively, that is.

No, that doesn't make sense. If the say-so of a single, random AP after a quick interview was enough for a Happy Card, why would they have to bother with a video interview at all? The video allows whatever other unknown members of TPTB to review the prospects in action, before making their casting decisions.

And let me make this clear: the prospects require acting. The AP (Jeff?) who videotaped me read me a few sample questions and stressed that I should verbalize any thought processes I have. This is a key test in seeing how a contestant might actually perform in front of the camera. Unfortunately, the APs can't be bothered with thinking up some new questions to ask, so they ask some that have already been used on the show.

Unfortunately, I am not an actor. When asked one of those oddball questions that used to be first tier gimmes with an "obvious" answer (except now, with the question randomization, it's not always so obvious to the contestants), I remembered the question and answered much too quickly, without pretending, as an actor might, that I'd never heard of it before and that I was working through it for the first time.

And, I'll confess, he asked a couple pop culture questions that I didn't remember the answer to and had no clue on; that didn't help me, either.

When you go to an audition, things can happen quickly. You better be prepared to act.

What else? :|

Well, thanks for the rundown on what went on in the video interview. This is the 1st I've read. If you've never read one either, I can see why you think you weren't prepared sufficiently for it, but, even had you gone in prepared to act, that doesn't mean you'll pull it off. Darn.

Especially the "pretending you don't know an answer to a question from the show you do remember" part. (They *are* recycling show questions on their written test, at least they were in past few years, so I guess that could have served as some kind of warning, but, frankly, I wouldn't have thought of it in such a nervous-making situation as a video interview.)

I had the preconception that the video interview asked the same kind of "show your goofy, infectious TV-ready personality to us" questions that the initial interview did.

Now that we know they put you in a mock-game situation (much as J! does) we can learn from this. I guess. I've never gotten as far as a video interview.

I got to my ROF stint by apparently charming Sonny, sans video. Bring back Sonny!!!

Thanks, Marley. I find this information extremely valuable. Basically, they're asking us to think out loud for the cameras. As far as I know, that's new.

I may not be able to give good interview, but if I'm able to get to the video portion of the audition, as I did a couple of years ago, that, I can do. --Bob

Yes, they obviously are. I noticed that change to the show a couple of years ago.

When I was on I asked if they preferred that I do that and was told to do whatever felt confortable, that they couldn't tell me how to act.

I suppose the elimination of the dreaded clock makes a difference. (I bet many BBs have suppressed their memories of those horrible clock years.) When there was a clock, all a contestant could do was try to answer in time and not screw up. They could show their personalities during the banter between questions. Now, answering the questions is part of the performance again.

Darn, guess I should read past the first page. :-(

But like I said Jeopardy really is the way to go, WWTBAM is no longer about giving away money, and if you appeared who would even notice? It airs at 12:30 where I'm at, meaning I've not seen an episode in something like three years.

There's not a station within 500 miles of here that has aired WWTBAM in the past 3 years. J! I can watch for sure!
(I'm making up the 500 miles part - but none close enough to show up on my cable, OK??)

No, but you didn't have to be cast in an audition.

(And they can't tell you how to act in an audition, either, but they can certainly decide your fate based on that.)

Well, that says it all. (They do have this thing called a DVR, you know. Or even an ancient device called a VCR.)

Of course, you fulfilled your quest back in the good old days, before the show started changing into what it is today.

Some of us still watch every new episode and still dream of getting our shot, no matter how that experience may have been degraded.

I still try to watch WWTBAM most of the time, but they changed the time and I haven't yet adjusted my habits. The rest of this season is reruns, right?

I make more of an effort not to miss Jeopardy. I just watched today's show. Watch for some truly insane FJ betting.

Yes, SyndieBAM is in re-runs until September.

They're rebroadcasting the "American Heroes" episodes, this week.
