None here yet, but we're still 50 minutes away. Hope there aren't any; the muttlies go crazy.

That's true. Around here, it's more actual gunfire than fireworks. Parents are afraid to let their kids outside at midnight to light fireworks because they might get hit with a stray bullet.

Two of my neighbors started firing guns at about 10:00. Yes, I could tell they were guns. Yes, that's illegal.

At least the local news media reminded everyone yesterday of the dangers of ceremonial gunfire. For those who don't remember, they was a young boy in the suburbs here that was killed on July 4 because someone shot a gun into the air, and didn't think about it's lack of escape velocity.

Of course, the media seemed to forget to mention about fireworks (illegal here in the city and surrounding counties). The next door neighbors had a party and set off a mess of them at midnight and, like Sportsfan, the dogs go nuts over it. I ended up sleeping with them in the family room most of the night as a result (this is always a problem on New Year's and Independence Day -- doesn't have to be next door, but it sets them off if they can hear them).

We had one firecracker set off up the street exactly as the ball hit the bottom. It was really great timing, and fortunately they held it to one. The muttlies slept peacefully through it.

I wonder what terminal velocity is for a bullet in our atmosphere. --Bob

Wikipedia says it's around 300 feet per second.

That can be fatal, but many celebratory bullets travel much faster, since they aren't fired straight up, and still have a horizontal component of velocity when they hit somebody.

Sadly, enough to be fatal (adding another meaning to "terminal" velocity), as I noted previously.

That translates to 205 MPH. Not something I'd like to get hit by.

You're hit by things at 670,616,629 mph all the time. :)
