Lyrically Speaking - 1/23/15

Game #6969: Hear Me Roar!

Heya everybody! I'm so glad my dear friend LB let me host a Free For All Friday game for his super spectacularly unextravagant LS game! I figured it was the perfect place to drop the puzzle I came up with using just my very own brainpower! Miracles never cease, right?

So here's how this game works.... pay attention, Frankie-poo, you might wanna take notes here! I came up with two groups of ten songs that I cleverly labeled as "Group I" and "Group II"... yeah, it took five of my writers to come up with that. Anyway, each of the songs in Group I can be paired up with a song in Group II based on a Phyllis, or a principle that you must discover for yourself! Sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't it?

Oops, gotta run! I got a date with Mr. Earl tonight, and I forgot to iron my thong! Goodnight everybody! Ha, ha, ha, ha ,ha....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for each correct match...

Group I:

1. Come inside the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth

2. See the man with the lonely eyes
Take his hand, you'll be surprised

3. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight

4. So I became hardcore
Couldn't take it no more
I'mma reveal EVERYTHING
Change the law
I find myself walkin' the streets
Tryin' to find what's really goin' on in the streets

5. I found the simple life ain`t so simple
When I jumped out on that road
I got no love, no love you`d call real
Ain`t got nobody waiting at home

6. Let`s leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town`s a little too rugged
For you and me, you bad girl

7. And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does
Well, lightning strikes
Maybe once, maybe twice

8. Seven lonely days
And a dozen towns ago
I reached out one night
And you were gone

9. The same old tingle that I feel inside
When that elevator starts its ride
Down and down I go, round and round I go
Like a leaf that's caught in the tide

10. In the moonlite
Under startlite
Songs old as the night are what I've been dreaming of

Group II:

A. Anybody here see the long-distance cheer for the notion
Well, I think we missed it
Anybody here see the sky weepin' tears for the ocean

B. I'm free, free, free, I'm free from your spell,
I'm free, free, free, I'm free from your spell,
And now that it's all over, baby,
All I can do is wish you well

C. Hearts beat
Love was sweet
And played our song
Now you belong to me

D. Well I hope you know which way to go
You're on your own again.
And don't come crying to me when you're the lonely one.
Remember what you've done.

E. Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see you fool
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel

F. Guess it's gonna be a cold lonely summer
But I'll fill the emptiness
I'll send you all my love every day in a letter

G. I had a dream but it turned to dust
And what I thought was love
That must have been lust
I was living in style
When the walls fell in

H. You're a big boy now
You'll never let her go
But that's just the kind of thing
She ought to know

I. You wanna stay out with your fancy friends.
I'm tellin' you it's go to be the end,

J. Look at the night and it don't seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulder
How can I hurt when I'm holding you

Phyllis Diller

Group I:

1. Come inside the show's about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth
Karn Evil #9 - Emerson Lake & Palmer

2. See the man with the lonely eyes
Take his hand, you'll be surprised
Give A Little Bit - Supertramp (And whatever lameass 90's band remade this about 10 years ago... the Goo Goos, I think)

3. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight
We're An American Band - Grand Funk Railroad

4. So I became hardcore
Couldn't take it no more
I'mma reveal EVERYTHING
Change the law
I find myself walkin' the streets
Tryin' to find what's really goin' on in the streets
Ghetto Superstar - Pras & Ol' Dirty Bastard (Another '98 unloading anthem...)

5. I found the simple life ain`t so simple
When I jumped out on that road
I got no love, no love you`d call real
Ain`t got nobody waiting at home
Running With The Devil - Van Halen

6. Let`s leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town`s a little too rugged
For you and me, you bad girl
I Love LS.... er, LA - Randy Newman

7. And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does
Well, lightning strikes
Maybe once, maybe twice
Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac

8. Seven lonely days
And a dozen towns ago
I reached out one night
And you were gone
Kentucky Rain - Elvis Presley

9. The same old tingle that I feel inside
When that elevator starts its ride
Down and down I go, round and round I go
Like a leaf that's caught in the tide
That Old Black Magic - Lotsa folks, though I had Sammy Davis, Jr. in the notebook...

10. In the moonlite
Under startlite
Songs old as the night are what I've been dreaming of
Method of Modern Love - Hall & Oates

Group II:

A. Anybody here see the long-distance cheer for the notion
Well, I think we missed it
Anybody here see the sky weepin' tears for the ocean
Hand Me Down World - Guess Who

B. I'm free, free, free, I'm free from your spell,
I'm free, free, free, I'm free from your spell,
And now that it's all over, baby,
All I can do is wish you well
The Thrill Is Gone - BB King

C. Hearts beat
Love was sweet
And played our song
Now you belong to me
The Drum - Bobby Sherman

D. Well I hope you know which way to go
You're on your own again.
And don't come crying to me when you're the lonely one.
Remember what you've done.
We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard

E. Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see you fool
Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel
Hello I Love You - Doors

F. Guess it's gonna be a cold lonely summer
But I'll fill the emptiness
I'll send you all my love every day in a letter
Sealed With a Kiss - Bobby Hyland (And others, but they'd lead you away from the Phyllis...)

G. I had a dream but it turned to dust
And what I thought was love
That must have been lust
I was living in style
When the walls fell in
Winning - Santana

H. You're a big boy now
You'll never let her go
But that's just the kind of thing
She ought to know
Tell Her About It - Billy Joel

I. You wanna stay out with your fancy friends.
I'm tellin' you it's go to be the end,
Don't Bring Me Down - ELO

J. Look at the night and it don't seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulder
How can I hurt when I'm holding you
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond

The "Phyllis" was that a word (or consecutive words) in the title of songs in List A could have "Woman" added onto the end to form the exact title of a song done by an artist in List B. The main clue was in the title of the game... which should have hinted that the word "Woman" was important to figuring out the theme of this game...

Matches?

1. Karn Evil #9 + I. Don't Bring Me Down = Evil Woman - ELO
2. Give a Little Bit + C. The Drum = Little Woman - Bobby Sherman
3. We're An American Band + A. Hand Me Down World = American Woman - The Guess Who
4. Ghetto Superstar + B. The Thrill Is Gone = Ghetto Woman - BB King
5. Running With the Devil + D. We Don't Talk Anymore = Devil Woman - Cliff Richard
6. I Love LA + E. Hello I Love You = LA Woman - The Doors
7. Gypsy + F. Sealed With A Kiss = Gypsy Woman - Brian Hyland
8. Kentucky Rain + J. Sweet Caroline = Kentucky Woman - Neil Diamond
9. That Old Black Magic + G. Winning = Black Magic Woman - Santana
10. Method of Modern Love + H. Tell Her About It = Modern Woman - Billy Joel

Image Bonus: Let's see something gaudy, tacky, and/or tasteless!

Well, you all didn't have any problem with this request! As much as I wanted to give Esto the bonus for throwing up my sisters, Search wound up one-upping him at the last minute with his magic lamp... so the 5 points go to him!

JJC Points:

Vandal gets 2 JJC points for the pregnancy test (I'd probably get Princess bride jokes a little more if I actually watched the movie...)

smiler gets a JJC point for the old school Padres unis...

frank gets 2 JJC points for Here Comes Medusa and Child...

TBone gets a JJC point for Rip Taylor, who came up on my blog not too long ago...

Weasel gets a JJC point for going Weird Al on me...

Panic gets a JJC point for his matches...

Krox gets 2 JJC points for God and copying off Beebs and Weasel...

elwood gets a JJC point for mocking Mecca...

Bob gets 2 JJC points for Pete Rose... I think I'd rather see McGwire in the Hall than Rose, and that's saying something...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for what I thought was a rather clever Krox that fits the Phyllis technically, though not is spirit...

Esto gets 3 JJC points for Nelly and the NKOTB fans...

Search gets a supermax for Aladdin on Halloween...
