Lyrically Speaking - 1/19/18

#1 Post by Gimme A Squiggly » Fri Jan 19, 2018 7:15 am

As LB will be quick to tell you, here at Mecca we enjoy experimenting with our background muzak to try and find the perfect blend of redundancy and torment to satisfy both our customers and associates. Our "overnight show" we introduced a few months ago has been a huge success... well, I guess I should clarify that it isn't really a show. It's just a random shuffle of about a couple hundred songs that plays over and over again for five hours from midnight to 5 AM. You may hear the same songs every night.... sometime two or three times, but you know, does it really matter if the songs are great? Well, we've changed the playlist a couple of times due to all of the complaints, and the set we installed for the new year is very heavy on oldies, and we cut down on the variety even more! Hey, who doesn't love the wonderful music of the 60's and 70's, right? Well, I guess LB has already grown tired of hearing these classics that have been played pretty much every night for the past two weeks, and now he wants to torture you with them. I think he should just quit his bitching and get back to work before I bring back the heavy rotation of modern country music like we had in October and November....... yeehaw, baby!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind

2. If I have to sleep on your doorstep all night and day
just to keep you from walkin’ away
let your friends laugh, even this I can stand
cause I want to keep you any way I can

3. "I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)

4. He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home

5. Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands

6. It's a fact that people get lonely, ain't nothing new
But a woman like you baby should never have the blues

7. A tiny spark will remain
And sparks turn into flames
And love can burn once again

8. Baby please, please don't take your love from me
I am yours for ever more, 'till eternity
Silence please, listen to the words I say
I'm not talking just for play, listen to me please

9. Happy days are here again
The time is right for makin' friends
Let's get together, how 'bout a quarter to ten
Come tomorrow, let's all do it again

10. So stick around
You're gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound

11. Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness

12. Was in the spring
Then spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along

13. Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman sing a song

14. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly yeah
I like the way ya make me about you baby
Want the whole wide world to see

15. What ever happened at the high school hop?
I guess you should remember soda pop.
Ever think about the girl next door
With beat up sneakers and a pony tail?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist from the 60's or 70's that you hear a lot.

At least you got "Best of My Love". I didn't get it and even considered putting that as my Krox before settling on Van Morrison.

Were it not for three words here--"the DA man"--I don't think I would've gotten this. Seriously, Allan Clarke garbles the lyrics here worse than Mick Jagger and John Fogerty combined. I think I can pick out about 8 words in the entire song not counting the title, which was given to us like the free space on a Bingo card. Let's see, where was I? Oh yeah...Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress-The Hollies

Hey Vandal...the image bonus was supposed to be "something cheesy", not "something extremely disturbing that will give me nightmares for the next 14 years". I'm sure that this was an unaired episode of The Twilight Zone.

That quite often influences my Krox. I usually pick a song that I know so well, it couldn't possibly one of the day's entries.

And after seeing y'all's answers, same as MrKelley -- coulda gotten at least two more, including the one I came back to later but still didn't get. Oh well.

I'm not talking just for play, listen to me please

9. Happy days are here again
The time is right for makin' friends
Let's get together, how 'bout a quarter to ten
Come tomorrow, let's all do it again

10. So stick around
You're gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound

11. Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness

12. Was in the spring
Then spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along

13. Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman sing a song

14. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly yeah
I like the way ya make me about you baby
Want the whole wide world to see

15. What ever happened at the high school hop?
I guess you should remember soda pop.
Ever think about the girl next door
With beat up sneakers and a pony tail?

When I went back to work Friday night, I found out just how many other oldie earworms from the past two weeks I forgot to include in this game (I wanted to make it a 20 song game, but got stuck at 15 going off the top of my head). Then Saturday night, the muzak changed again... back to some quasi-variety that has everything from Song #1 to some newish sounding hip hop that has to pause about every three seconds for censorship. And the shallow depth of the variety certainly hasn't changed...

1. Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind
Where Did Our Love Go - Supremes

2. If I have to sleep on your doorstep all night and day
just to keep you from walkin’ away
let your friends laugh, even this I can stand
cause I want to keep you any way I can
Ain't To Proud To Beg - Temptations or Rolling Stones (The former is our earworm. Mecca seems to rarely play any Stones songs...)

3. "I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then (bah-dah-dah)
Build Me Up Buttercup- The Foundations (Between this song....)

4. He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home
Brandy - Looking Glass (...and this song, it always seemed a matter of not IF, but HOW MANY times you were going to hear them each night)

5. Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder (One of four Stevie songs in the rotation, and it was always awkward when they'd all get pulled from the shuffle within an hour of each other, which happened a lot...)

6. It's a fact that people get lonely, ain't nothing new
But a woman like you baby should never have the blues
I Can Help - Billy Swan

7. A tiny spark will remain
And sparks turn into flames
And love can burn once again
I'll Be Around - Spinners

8. Baby please, please don't take your love from me
I am yours for ever more, 'till eternity
Silence please, listen to the words I say
I'm not talking just for play, listen to me please
Heaven Knows - Donna Summer

9. Happy days are here again
The time is right for makin' friends
Let's get together, how 'bout a quarter to ten
Come tomorrow, let's all do it again
Good Times - Chic

10. So stick around
You're gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound
Bennie and the Jets - Elton John

11. Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

12. Was in the spring
Then spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond (Can someone explain where the "so goods" come from? They aren't in the song itself. Who adds these to the chorus and WHY? I never hear anyone actually do this...)

13. Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman sing a song
Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - Hollies

14. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly yeah
I like the way ya make me about you baby
Want the whole wide world to see
Best of My Love - Emotions

15. What ever happened at the high school hop?
I guess you should remember soda pop.
Ever think about the girl next door
With beat up sneakers and a pony tail?
Beach Baby - First Class (This has been a Mecca earworm for a few months now... played almost every night, but it hasn't gotten old yet. And I still sing it as "Breech Baby"...)

Image Bonus: Show me something cheesy from the 60's or 70's. - You know, when I try to get cute with my Image Bonus descriptions, there's no need to get LITERAL! I'm gonna have to start docking points for that...... but only AFTER I award the IBB to Earl for the government cheese. I thought there was no way melly's classic cig ads wouldn't win, but I was won over by the food of the poor gods...
