DoND Question

#1 Post by takinover » Mon May 05, 2008 10:26 pm

I channeled-surfed onto Deal or No Deal and they are doing an around the world special and this episode was taped in the Philippines, with their music and models (actually not a bad idea to mix things up - much better than celebrities).

My question is does anyone know if the $1 Million has been won anywhere in the world?

Certainly not in the Philippines, where both of the contestants won more money than anyone had ever won (in the Philippines). Interesting note - Corazon Aquino's daughter was the host of the show. Other tidbits - the show is broadcast in Tagalog (I owe Meredith an apology; I thought it was pronounced TAG-a-log, but Ms. Aquino pronounced it tag-A-log) and the models don't march down the steps, they dance. On Wednesday the show moves to South Africa.

Yes, £250,000 is the top prize in the UK (about US$493,000)... but it was won only once.

The Australian version has had two grand prize winners of AUS$200,000 (about US$189,000).

Brazil produced a grand prize winner of 1,000,000 reals (about US$603,000).

Three international winners have won more in terms of U.S. dollars than Michele Falco (US$750,000 winner):

Tunisia produced a grand prize winner of 1,000,000 dinars (US$849,000).

Spain produced a grand prize winner of €600,000 (US$932,000).

The all-time champion comes from the Netherlands. The grand prize of 10 million guilders (pre-Euro) was given away in 2001. Back then, 10 million guilders was worth around US$6.6 million.

That'll buy a lot of pot and hookers.

With the pot and the hookers, that person can make a lot of soup and rugs.

One of the things I found interesting was that Howie implied that DoND was an American game show that had been exported to 120 countries; of course that's not true.

Right. DoND is purely a creation of the Dutch.

So when they travel to these different countries, do the local hosts take over for Howie or does he host with them? What's the point of this gimmick?

On last night's show Howie did the hosting, but the Filipino host did some as well, although she seemed to be there just for "local color". She did teach Howie how to say "Deal or no deal?" in Tagalog, and also "open the case".

As to the point, it's sweeps time and it's a way of refreshing the show a little in the hopes of attracting new viewers.

That's what I don't understand. They tape in a studio. So they travel around the world to use a different studio (perhaps adding some stock footage of outdoor attractions) and teach Howie to say "Deal or no deal?" in Tagalog. Maybe the local audience applauds differently for the same old, imported American contestants?

And that attracts new interest???
