I hope he has a happy face to wear at the awards banquet.....

Maybe he will if Manager Meanie stays off his back. I hope he received that sternly worded email I sent addressing that behaviour....

So are Double A awards banquets a formal affair or does everyone just bring some eats to share and they hold it in the back room at the bowling alley?

Probably at the Waffle House, assuming the generator's working....

The see-saw swung south for the stinkerball as the Squirrels got stomped, squished, smacked, and stung 8-zip. Bowie avoided being swept at home by the Altoona Curve, who are in last place but are also the defending EL champs. Lately Richmond has been .500 pretty much winning every other night. Bowie's struggles winning only one game each series have kept the Squirrels in it.

Final weekend
Bowie W73 L64 ... home to Erie (65-73) Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon
Richmond W73 L65... at Altoona Curve (63-74) Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon

A tough night for the Sinkbeil...but Brett Sinkbeil is the other guy's pitcher! Squirrels beat him and the Curve 8-4. Meanwhile the bleeding continues in Bowie as the Baysox lost 9-2 at home to Erie. Squirrels regain the wild card lead by 1/2 a game!

The weather forecast for Monday, season finale, is really bad in western PA with heavy rain that will affect the coast late and into Tuesday. The Squirrels at Altoona are scheduled for noon so they'll have all day to play the game. I'll wonder what the result of a rainout will be since AA ball does not make up rainouts after the last day of the season.
Meanwhile both teams are under way with night games Squirrels lead 1-0 while Bowie down 2-0.

Squirrels and Curve are still playing into 12 innings. Baysox lost. Squirrels have had a great chance every inning but strikeouts, a runner out at the plate, and good defensive plays keep it tied. A win would put the Squirrels' magic number to 1 with 2 to play.

... and now a pitcher (Chuck Lofgren) gets a hit for the Squirrels as they are out of non-pitcher PHs to grab a one-run lead in the top of the 12th!

No Heath Hembree (reliable closer) since he had to pitch last night to preserve a win. Stinkerballer Justin Schumer came on with one out and a runner on second and tried his best, but gave up a tying run on a single.

Altoona should have gotten the winner, but a cautious stop sign at third on a double kept the Squirrels alive. Then the Curve sent the runner home on a medium fly ball, the catcher dropped the throw but the runner was called out. They say the catcher had it long enough for the out. On to the 13th...

After barely squeaking through the 12th and surviving the 13th, the Squirrels came right back in the 14th with three runs. Righthander Austin Fleet retired the Curve in order. Squirrels are one win from the playoffs!

I would love to see the Baysox put in the same position as the '72 Red Sox.....

(This is not about sports, but it does belong in a "squirrels" thread.)

I just want to report that one of ES's eastern cousins threw an acorn at me a few minutes ago. There wasn't an oak tree near where I was sitting, so he had to carry that ammo a good, long way.

He missed!

Bowie snapped out of their funk and won big today. Richmond can win tonight if the rain stops and they can start scoring.

It will come down to Monday as the Squirrels lost 1-0 on a double then a single with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Like their parent club, the Giants, the Squirrels were great on the mound but just weren't able to score or even get many runners into scoring position. Beast's 1972 Sox comparison may come true.

Squirrels starter was Jason Stevenson, who retired out of baseball in 2005 for personal reasons after playing with the Montreal Expos organization starting in 2001. Returned to baseball last year and played this year with the Chico Outlaws of the North American Baseball League (8-0, 1.68 ERA). Signed by the SF Giants August 22 and assigned to AAA Fresno (1-0, 5.56 ERA). Then as an accounting move, SF reassigned him to rookie league, then to the Squirrels. Was supposed to be Friday's emergency starter but arrived too late.

The game got started on time. Squirrels had chances but only one run and that was the result of an outfield error.
Stevenson pitched 7 innings allowing one run on eight hits, most of them singles towards the end of his time on the mound. Score tied 1-1.
Then the rain got heavy in the bottom of the 7th with a Curve runner on 2nd and the Squirrels played that like a sudden-death 9th, walking a man to get to a weaker hitter. A strikeout preserved 1-1 going into the 8th.
They started the top of the eighth and with one out, no one on, Wes Hodges hit a screaming line-drive right over the wall for a HR and a 2-1 Squirrels lead.
However, the tarp came out afterwards.
The rain is rather steady and the ground took a soaking so this could be a long wait. If the game is called, it is a suspended game (tie after 7) and could set up a one-game playoff if Bowie (up 2-0 in their game) should win. However they do have all day to wait.

The Richmond Flying Squirrels are going to the playoffs!

In a finish that would make the 1972 Tigers-Red Sox rather tame in comparison, the Eastern League stepped in and announced the Squirrels as winners even though they could not complete the 8th inning. The rain in Altoona is expected to continue strongly enough so they could not complete the game. (Major League rules would suspend the game to be completed tomorrow) Meanwhile the Bowie Baysox are winning their game 3-2 in the top of the 9th when a storm hit delaying their game.

Wednesday and Thursday: Squirrels at Harrisburg
Friday: Harrisburg at Squirrels
Saturday (if nec): Harrisburg at Squirrels
Sunday (if nec): Squirrels at Harrisburg

The Harrisburg Senators are the top team in the league, but the Squirrels own a 13-8 record against Harrisburg. Strangely they played 15 games in Richmond (10-5) and only 6 in Harrisburg (3-3). IIRC, that imbalance was caused by extensive flooding on City Island during the early summer that shifted games away from the Senators' home field.
