Bree has approached this like a drill sergeant, bringing home reading material night after night for them to study. Grandma Betty has resisted saying if she does not know it now, she will never learn it.

They would like to ask the expert
Mere: Why do I think that's a brilliant idea. Let's get our expert Alan Thicke with a free face-to-face Skype video call... Hey Alan. I think you're gonna like this question. Ladies are going for $16,000. I'm gonna feed you the question... now.
ATE result
Alan: Um, You know, um, I wish this were one that I wrote, it would be a little easier. I promise you "Without Us" is not the theme to Growing Pains. And I wish I knew other people's work in this area better than my own. And I can't guarantee you an authentic answer for this. I don't think it's Family Ties, which would bring you down to Who's the Boss and Silver Spoons. And I wish I could help you more.
Mere: Well Alan, I thank you very much. (to contestants) He did his best there. He says it's definitely not Growing Pains, he should know about that one, 17 seconds on the clock.
They talk quickly and then ask for Double Dip (at :08 )
Spoiler
Their first answer is A, Who's the Boss, but it is wrong. Clock resumes
Bree: "He said it is not Growing Pains he didnothinkitwasFamilyTiessowe'regonnasayD, final answer"
D lights up. Bree says "Oh, everybody knows it's not the right answer. I heard them Awww"
Mere says "it's not the right answer. He was wrong. It was Family Ties. Oh, boy. Well, he might have thrown you a little bit, he said he did not know."

Correct answer was C, Family Ties. (:05)
They left with $1000.

It was reported in another thread that Alan Thicke disappeared after this episode and was replaced by Ken Jennings. If this kind of thing were to happen to me (say I miss a $8000 Yankees or IRS question), I'd quietly make my way out the back door too. Come to think of it, if Ken were my backup, I'd just give the floor to Ken at the start.

This is a few miles north of the Albany-Schenectady area, so they're not WEs®.

$8K: It's either Julianne Moore or Cameron Diaz. I will ATA as well.

$16K: After Alan Thicke missed this easy TV question, I sure hope he got replaced by KenJen.

If a 'Hilarious Ziggy cartoon' ever appears - I would save it, along with the headline regarding the freezing over of Hades.

See, if they had watched Uncle Ned say "I hit Alex!!" on Nick at Nite they'd never have needed ATE.
Ergo, watching television is good and beneficial.

Three generations in the Hot Seats and they can still use the new baby hook!

Alan Thicke is their expert and they just happen to have a TV question with his show as one of the distractors? Some would be suspicious of this "coincidence".

Without TDC® the "fifth lifeline" (audience response) might have saved them. As soon as they went for the Double Dip I figured they were gone since Thicke had ruled out the correct answer, and, since they had no idea, they'd be (mis)guided by his statement. A shame because they were doing quite well.
