For a rocket scientist, Ethan sure turned out to be an idiot.

$4K-pretty sure it's Bourne. My dad liked to read Robert Ludlum books (especially on long plane trips!).

$25K-I had NO idea. ATE or PaF here. I thought this was an undervalued question. I think it should have been a $250K question (at least).
I'm just a game show nerd.

Not at all. They described Mencken as a "satirist". That points directly to the correct answer.

Just before Ethan gave his answer, Ethan repeated the answers, leaving out nitrogen. I think Ethan ran into the same problem many of us had during our first tries at the phone game: it's hard to remember four choices read to you verbally, if you're not taking notes! So he didn't catch the right choice and was left trying to choose between three unlikely noble gasses.

Although it seems that helium would be a much better choice; if you make that bag of chips lighter, it'll have fewer calories, won't it? :P

It seemed unusual for the question writers to have that kind of gimme at $25K, though.

Time to ATA - I would have had no idea and although the "obvious" answer is Idol (considering the dollar value of the question) I don't think I'd have risked it.

A rocket scientist who doesn't know that radon is radioactive? Who doesn't know that it's the gas that people try to get out of their houses because it's a health hazard? Sheesh!®
