Ithaca in the news

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Fri Nov 30, 2007 8:02 am

John Ashcroft gave a speech at Cornell, last night. Apparently, he was less that warmly received by some.

About 13 minutes into the attorney general's speech, more than 100 students and Ithaca community members stood up from their seats, turned their backs to Ashcroft and placed black shrouds over their heads. The protesters stood in silence for another 14 minutes before walking out of his speech together.

I like protests like that.

That is how I would do it.

No, you would turn around and raise your skirt, just like your avatar.

I would have to have spent many more hours on the elliptical to do that in public.

Then, I just might.

I was home, typing up SyndieBAM transcripts and yelling about game show scandals on 5th Grader! 8)

Seriously, Ithaca gets lots of big-name visitors, thanks to Cornell, but I rarely take advantage of the opportunity to see them. Attendance at these events is usually free, but when there's a really popular name, you need to get tickets in advance. Since I'm not on campus, that's a problem for me.

I'd really like to have seen Stephen Colbert, when he came to town a while back, but I didn't know about it until I saw the story in the paper the next day. :(

A friend of mine works at the Statler--he's an A/V guy--so he might have a good story to tell about this one!

You do? In a teeny, tiny, backwater community like Los Angeles? :P

I feel like I should recognize that avatar, but I don't. My hunch says its one of those TV executives who are less than heroes around here...

Not sure exactly who, but he's someone's new football coach.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

Tim Bernser_Lee inventor of the world wide web
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Dingdingding! Suitdude recognized Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. He spoke at the Annenberg School of Communication at USC yesterday.

Congrats, SuitDude!

He still looks a lot like Jeff Bezos. A little gaunter in the face, maybe...

Oddly is was the hint that made me check out Mr. Lee.

Not particularly surprising at a place like Cornell.

Hell, whats more surprising is 500-600 students stayed to listen. Must be driving the faculty there nuts.

Not sure I would be interested in spending time to listen to Ashcroft myself and certainly not when I was in college!

I doubt that everyone who stayed was a supporter. Probably quite a few who just didn't get the "Bring your black shroud" e-mail.
