Dead or Alive? Day 1 12/01/07
If you didn’t see the rules post on 11/30, it’s viewtopic.php?t=1535
For each of the ten people below, identify them as Dead (D) or Alive (A). No penalty for wrong answers, so flip a coin if you have to! At the end , make a guess on what you think today’s theme is.
1. Richard Feynman
2. Stephen Hawking
3. Linus Pauling
4. James Watson
5. Stephen Jay Gould
6. Hans Bethe
7. Francis Crick
8. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar
9. Shirley Jackson
10. Lise Meitner[/url]

Link: most but not all of the ones that I recognize are physicists. All of the ones that I recognize are published authors (mostly science, with one exception), and most have speculated on 'origins ' so I will guess that all of them are people who have been noted for speculations on the origins of life.

Oh, joy, physicists. I'll be starting this one off with a bang. Couldn't you at least have put like Newton or Kepler in there for me? Ha!mrkelley23 wrote:If you didn’t see the rules post on 11/30, it’s viewtopic.php?t=1535

I know a few of these are scientists, but I don't think Shirley Jackson is. The Shirley Jackson I know was an author.
Let's say the theme is they have all written books.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Some of these people are physicists, some are chemists, one's a biologist, one is a fiction writer as far as I know. Some have won Nobels, some have not. The ones I know are all published authors, so I'll go with that.

Yes, I did mean James Watson and Francis Crick. I'll edit now, then figure out a way to grade later.

Are we allowed to make comments in thread after we answer or is it only for responses?
I actually looked up Chandrasekhar since I thought I knew him (I didn't, I was thinking of a forensic psychologist, who is a lot younger).
But I think I might know the theme now. It's a guess, because I didn't look up anybody else. I'm aware that it doesn't count since I already answered (not to mention that I only thought of it after I read a blurb on the guy).

Looks like I forgot how to count too.
From what I can tell, not only did I miss numbering correctly, I didn't answer the 'real' number 10.
Here are what my answers should be: (adding names so I don't get confused....again)
1. Richard Feynman - Dead (orig 1)
2. Stephen Hawking - Alive (orig 2)
3. Linus Pauling - Alive (orig 3)
4. James Watson - Dead (orig 5)
5. Stephen Jay Gould - Alive (orig 6)
6. Hans Bethe - Alive (orig 7)
7. Francis Crick - Dead (orig
8. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekha- Dead (orig 9)
9. Shirley Jackson - Alive (orig 10)
10. Lise Meitner - Alive (orig not answered)
Throw this all out if you want though. Perhaps I should just play silently along with the rest of you.
