Lyrically Speaking 12-4-07

#1 Post by traininvain » Tue Dec 04, 2007 8:11 am

LS #2…………………………………………1982

OK, this year we'll take a trip back to 1982, my first year of what would become 20 years in the record business. As I recall the two big albums that year were John Cougar's American Fool & Asia's Asia. None of those two artists songs are part of the game today, but we have two #1's and three other top 10 hits amongst our other top 40 hits, along with one song that couldn't quite break into the top 40, but went on to 'bigger' things down the road....

Good luck and have fun!

1. I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I'd find a much better place
Either with or without you

2. You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burnin' for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove

3. Now the feeling is beginning to grow
And the meaning is something you only know
If you believe it take my hand and I’ll take your heart

4. If you judge a book by the cover
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me, I go from one extreme to another

5. Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

6. On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well, by seventy-six, we'll be a-okay

7. Now over at the temple
Oh, they really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing

8. I saw your eyes
And you touched my mind
Although it took a while
I was falling in love

9. You can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We’ll be there in just a while
If you follow me

10. After all you've done for me
All I really want to do is
Take the love you've brought my way
And give it all right back to you
Enjoy every sandwich

I thought this would be a slam dunk, since this was when I graduated from high school, but alas....

1. I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar

Ick! Don't You Want Me, The Human League

2. You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burnin' for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove

I can't pull this, but I think I'm blocking it because it sucks. I could be wrong....

3. Now the feeling is beginning to grow
And the meaning is something you only know
If you believe it take my hand and I’ll take your heart

It's Huey Lewis and the News, but I can't think of the title. Happy to be Stuck With You doesn't seem to fit and it's later than 82. I think...

4. If you judge a book by the cover
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me, I go from one extreme to another

The Look of Love, ABC

5. Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

Can't place it

6. On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well, by seventy-six, we'll be a-okay

Familiarish, but can't pull it.

7. Now over at the temple
Oh, they really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing

Rock the Casbah, The Clash. Fun one!

8. I saw your eyes
And you touched my mind
Although it took a while
I was falling in love

Nope, but the lyrics are pretty generic-looking.

9. You can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We’ll be there in just a while
If you follow me

Steppin' Out, Joe Jackson. GREAT album!

10. After all you've done for me
All I really want to do is
Take the love you've brought my way
And give it all right back to you
OMG!! I had forgotten about this! I loved this tape, and I'll have to see if they ever made a CD. I loved Cynical Girl. Someday, Someway, Marshall Crenshaw.
Better than last one, but still no great shakes....

Ah, 1982. A slow year by my standards but I might have known this rather unusual offering.

Now I've got a terminal daydream
Something that you'll never know
I keep it right here in my backpack, mon
And take it where ever I go

Perhaps not one everyone would remember though.

I heard # 1 recently - on a TV show, I think and I do not know it.

Nor do I know any of the other ones.

My goal is to know at least 10 by the end of the month.

I'm glad I dint post the only one I knew. RadioDude played #1 just the other day, so I recognized it.

I recognized 2 and 3 after I saw the titles, but I never heard them just from looking at the lyrics.

How about 1956? I bet I could get a couple of those.

"You ain't nothin but a houn dog......." My older brother started singing that one years after it was popular for some reason and got it banned at CasaSprotsMom.

Then he started in on Cielito Lindo but never got busted for that. Ay ay ay ay.............

Tried to post this four hours ago, so let's try this again...

LS #2…………………………………………1982

1. I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew Id find a much better place
Either with or without you
#1 Don’t You Want Me Baby – The Human League

I love this song, it always reminds me of an girlfriend from the past, unfortunately it ended for much like the song discribes.

2. You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burnin' for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove
#1 Abracadabra – Steve Miller Band

Never really thought that this was that great of a song, but there is something about it. IIRC this is one of the few songs to make it to #1 twice in the same year. Pretty sure that it dropped out of the #1 spot after being there for few weeks to the #2 spot and then about a week later made the move back to #1 again for another week.

3. Now the feeling is beginning to grow
And the meaning is something you only know
If you believe it take my hand and I’ll take your heart
#7 Do You Believe In Love – Huey Lewis & The News

I believe that eyegor said that saying something bad about Huey Lewis is like kicking a puppy, I agree.

4. If you judge a book by the cover
Then you'd judge the look by the lover
I hope you'll soon recover
Me, I go from one extreme to another
#18 The Look of Love – ABC

I was never really a fan of this group let along this song, but I heard it about a week ago on the radio and thought, 'hey that's a pretty good song'.

5. Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
#62 The Message – Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five feat Melle Mel

Didn't make a big mark on the charts, but in the grand scheme of things...

6. On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well, by seventy-six, we'll be a-okay
#26 I.G.Y. (What A Beautiful World) – Donald Fagen

Great song, great album. I remember driving home one night hearing it on the radio and immediately heading to the record store to pick it up so I could play it at the bar later that night. Good video too and I.G.Y does stand for The International Geophysical Year which took place over 1957-58..

7. Now over at the temple
Oh, they really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
#8 Rock The Casbah – The Clash

Not their best song, but a damn good one. Still politically on the mark some 25 years later, unfortunately.

8. I saw your eyes
And you touched my mind
Although it took a while
I was falling in love
#30 Space Age Love Song – A Flock of Seagulls

I was never a big fan of I Ran, but this song is just perfect in its simplicity. The lyrics in the clue are basically the lyrics in the song, as a matter of fact that last line is the chorus.

9. You can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
We’ll be there in just a while
If you follow me
#6 Steppin’ Out – Joe Jackson

Another great song from a great album. I've been lucky enough to see Joe Jackson a couple of time live, good stuff. On a side note, I heard one of the songs from Mike's Murder on the radio yesterday.

10. After all you've done for me
All I really want to do is
Take the love you've brought my way
And give it all right back to you
#36 Someday Someway – Marshall Crenshaw

I'm always surprised that Marshall Crenshaw didn't make it bigger. I LOVE this song, it should have been a Top Ten hit! I got to see him once live at the Bottom Line in NYC at a WNEW breakfast show, my firend and I headed home in my van blasting Rockin' Around in NYC in NYC. Another side note, I heard Cynical Girl on the radio yesterday.

Did you miss my answer to #10 that ended up lost outside the quote? I think I actually got 5. Don't die of shock...

Sorry mini, I did see it the first time, but when I was scoring I guess I missed it. You are now correctly scored.

BTW, I did see your quote of both Elvis Costello & Joe Jackson somewhere in a post (although, for the life of me I can't remember where), didn't want you to think I hadn't noticed, very cool.
