I don't think that Bill Nye meant to say anything hurtful, but he really called the contestant out for needing this lifeline.

Then again, what was she thinking?

Gotta be hotseatitis. No other excuse is allowable for using a lifeline on an extremely simple math/political question.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

The same thing happened to my father when he was in the hotseat. My father had AJ Jacobs as the expert and AJ said "You've got to be kidding me" luckily they edited that out of the show when it aired.

"Features" a vegetable? It's name may contain a vegetable but I don't think kids really play the game with a hot potato.

This is a basic math question; even if you don't know how many senators there are, the only answer that's evenly divisible by 3 is 300.

Ear, you must not have been a fan of SNL back in the early days. I can't hear "Fort Lee" without thinking of Roseanna Rosannadanna, whose questions were always from "Mr. Richard Feder of Fort Lee, New Jersey".
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Being the church-going sort, staying up late to watch SNL was not something I could manage and be coherent the next day. Not to mention that I might well have thought it was a made-up town for the purposes of the skit.

I jog to Fort Lee often to cross the George Washington Bridge. It makes for an interesting jog. (yeah, I know, I am a WE, and proud of it)

Quite well known in our household, thank you very much. In the top three of favorite cookies, and certainly the easiest to make of all the faves.

Not enough people bake. At least 18% of that audience don't.

A few years back, I went with Pealette to look for an apartment in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The population was overwhelmingly of Asian descent. In walking the streets, I got a glimpse of what it is like to be a minority.

According the Wikipedia, Asian people make up 31.43% of the borough. Whites make up the majority with 62.75%. Fort Lee is also one of the nations top ten municipalities by percentage of Korean population.

Well, if they happen to all start talking at the same moment, the answer is three minutes, so anything between 3 and 300 is a plausibly correct answer.

It's clear enough that they're actually talking about senator-minutes, not elapsed minutes, but the inherent ambiguity in this question together with its inflated $4000 valuation would induce a momentary panic that I was somehow misreading it. I think I'd calm down fast enough to give the desired answer within 30 seconds, but if the clock got too close to 0, I could imagine blowing a lifeline on this.

I thought that Oxnard was a made-up name for years. It took a Santa Barbara native to set me straight.

On $4K, EarEndel said:

"This is a basic math question; even if you don't know how many senators there are, the only answer that's evenly divisible by 3 is 300."

My thoughts exactly.

Also, a question for $500K about raccoons?? That would be interesting ...

(I'm a day behind on reading the transcripts and haven't read today's yet.)

Thanks transcription team. This is one that got preempted by breaking news on the Craig's List Killer. A Local Boy. (No, they didn't kill Craig's List. They killed one woman who advertised as a masseuse on Craig's List, & robbed 2 others. Allegedly. Of course. The police have not only got their computer files, they've got "mementos" the (alleged) Killer kept in their [very real, as in "people have seen them living there"] apartment. Where is this trial going to be held where they get an unprejudiced jury, after the case made Nightline for a couple nights running?

Prolly from this list, where "nobody knows what I'm talking about" unless I explain in depth, as per above.)
