Censor check

#1 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:39 am

I don't know if an Otto oversees this Bored or not, but I'm gonna find out:

Phil Otto
Otto Van Otto
Otto
Houston's newspaper, the Otto

Edited by Bob78164, who hopes Nelly won't mind the joke. --Bob

I think we have just seen our first example of abuse of power by a moderator. For the record, I would never do something like this, regardless of how amusing I thought it might be. If NellyLunatic would like to restore his original post, I encourage him to do so by using the edit function.

I thought it was funny that all of the previously censored words got replaced by Otto. It does show how big of an attention whore Otto is... :P

For the record, this Bored does have the functionality for Otto in place. There's basically a master list of words that Otto will ban, but it's empty for the moment.

Words can easily be added to that list if everyone thinks that they should be. Or not. I thought about adding in some obvious choices (the seven words you can't say on television, or something to that effect) but decided to wait and see what everyone thought of that.

Perhaps a poll is in order.

Above all, the name C ollins must never be uttered, lest...

well, something bad should happen. Maybe.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.

Aw, come on, we're all adults. No need to ban words.

Besides, Otto can be defeated every time with the ol' HTML tricks.

Otto is feeble. Otto is weak. Otto is irrelevant.

I spit in Otto's general direc*urk*. Edited by Otto, who spits back. Harder.

I believe Annie had to get permission from her mother. If we let words such as wookus and others to permiate this bored, her mother may revoke her membership.

I actually gave it significant thought before deciding to go ahead with it. Here's what I thought.

First and foremost, my philosophy is that "practical jokes" are funny only if the "victim" agrees that they're funny. So if Nelly had expressed any discomfort whatsoever with my gag, I would have changed it back myself, and offered an apology. I'm glad that my judgment (he would enjoy the joke) proved correct in this instance.

Second, the post was obviously intended not to have any content whatsoever, so there was no risk that I would change an intended meaning, even inadvertently.

Third, obviously, I identified myself as the author of this little prank.

Fourth, I thought it might provoke a discussion as to the appropriate use of the "Moderation" function. For the record, other than spam, I have a hard time imagining that I would make any "non-consensual" use of the power. (I view this use as consensual because I could and would have immediately restored Nelly's original post in full if he'd wanted, but instead he "ratified" what I did.)

Fifth, I thought it would be funny, and I had some hope that others would agree. --Bob

Regardless of whether I thought it was funny, I would like to go on record as stating I would NEVER want anyone to do this to one of my posts, for humorous or any other purposes.

Feel free to amuse-up my posts anytime. Could you give Wintergreen THE POWER too, so he can smarten up my posts? :D

Can you get someone to dumb them down?

What was Nelly's original post? I'm not really excited about someone screwing around with my posts, either. I'm fairly capable of messing them up all by myself.

It's called "quote" and then comment.

Nelly's start-off post in this thread originally used the actual words that used to trigger Otto's arrival. Hoping that Nelly wouldn't mind, I used my Moderator powers to have a little fun. The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. --Bob

My nominee for funniest post on the bored thus far...
