Lyrically Speaking 12-6-07 Answers, Scoring & Such

#1 Post by traininvain » Thu Dec 06, 2007 8:10 am

I had planned on doing a game from the 90's, but I screwed up, so I had to fall back on the late 70's...

1979, the year that I graduated from high school, and a great year for music. We've got a bunch of new artists here and a couple that of older ones too, a couple of the artists would hang around with big careers and many would hardly be heard from again.

Good Luck & Have Fun!

LS #4……………………………..1979

1. Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall
And there`s always something more
Lost in talk, I waste my time
And it`s all been said before

2. I`ve been drifting on the sea of heartbreak
Trying to get myself ashore
For so long, for so long

3. I'm solid gold
I've got the goods
They stand when I walk
Through the neighborhoods

4. I'll shine up the old brown shoes
Put on a brand-new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me

5. Jenny was sweet
She always smiled for the people she meet
On trouble and strife
She had another way of looking at life

6. And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go

7. You wanna stay out with your fancy friends
I'm telling you it's gotta be the end

8. Well my buddy Jim Bass he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower

9. Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's don e so far

10. And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky-tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night

Ah, 1979. A strong year indeed, especially for the concert crowd. But this one was one of my favorites.

All a part of some strange plan I'm sure

I'M A LITTLE STUNNED THAT I DID SO WELL AT THIS - 1979 WAS A FEW YEARS BEFORE I PAID REALLY ANY ATTENTION TO POPULAR MUSIC.

BOY, THESE SONGS REMIND ME OF THE ROLLER RINK

1. Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall
And there`s always something more
Lost in talk, I waste my time
And it`s all been said before
ROMEO'S TUNE - STEVE FORBERT. I SAW HIM OPEN FOR ARLO GUTHRIE ONCE.

2. I`ve been drifting on the sea of heartbreak
Trying to get myself ashore
For so long, for so long
NO CLUE

3. I'm solid gold
I've got the goods
They stand when I walk
Through the neighborhoods
HUH. MY BROTHER AND I GOT REALLY INTO THIS SHOW (ALL WHAT? 3 EPISODES? I REMEMBER ONE WHERE THE GUY AGREED TO BUY A $5,000 PAINTING AT SOME ART AUCTION TO IMPRESS A GIRL). I'VE GOT NO IDEA WHO DID THE SONG, THOUGH.
MAKIN' IT - FROM THE TV SHOW OF THE SAME NAME

4. I'll shine up the old brown shoes
Put on a brand-new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me
I WANT YOU TO WANT ME - CHEAP TRICK

5. Jenny was sweet
She always smiled for the people she meet
On trouble and strife
She had another way of looking at life
NO IDEA. FOR SOME REASON "NIGHT OWL" BY LITTLE RIVER BAND COMES INTO MY HEAD, BUT I DON'T THINK THAT CAN BE RIGHT.

6. And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go
1979? REALLY? I THOUGHT IT WAS LATER - I THOUGHT IT COINCIDED WITH THE START OF MTV, WHICH I KNOW WAS IN AUGUST 1981 BECAUSE MY CABLE GOT IT IN AUGUST 1982 AND THEY WERE CELEBRATING THEIR 1ST BIRTHDAY
VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR - THE BUGGLES

7. You wanna stay out with your fancy friends
I'm telling you it's gotta be the end
DON'T BRING ME DOWN - ELO

8. Well my buddy Jim Bass he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
GOLD - JOHN STEWART

9. Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's don e so far
THE RAINBOW CONNECTION - MISS PIGGY

10. And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky-tonk just like anything

9. Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered

LS #4……………………………..1979

1. Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall
And there`s always something more
Lost in talk, I waste my time
And it`s all been said before
#11 Romeo's Tune – Steve Forbert

I really love the piano and the lyrics in this song, and hey he was a ‘new’ Dylan (along with about 50 other guys. I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Forbert a few years ago, he put on an excelent show.

2. I`ve been drifting on the sea of heartbreak
Trying to get myself ashore
For so long, for so long
#18 Hold On – Ian Gomm

One of my favorite songs to play back in the day, Gomm was part of the pub rock group Brinsley Schwarz along with Nick Lowe, among others. In fact Gomm co-wrote Nick Lowe’s hit Cruel to be Kind. Kind of wonder why I didn’t use Cruel to be Kind in the game.

3. I'm solid gold
I've got the goods
They stand when I walk
Through the neighborhoods
#5 Makin' It – David Naughton

OK, let’s face it this song sucks, (I’m kind of shocked that anyone got it correct with just those three lines), but I figured I’d throw it in as a joke.

4. I'll shine up the old brown shoes
Put on a brand-new shirt
I'll get home early from work
If you say that you love me
#7 I Want You To Want Me – Cheap Trick

Another great single from the 70’s and it’s all live!

5. Jenny was sweet
She always smiled for the people she meet
On trouble and strife
She had another way of looking at life
#15 Driver’s Seat – Sniff 'n' The Tears

One hit wonders make the world go ‘round, where would we be without them? Another great song from a group that was never heard from again.

6. And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go
#40 Video Killed The Radio Star – The Buggles

The song & video that helped launch MTV was originally recorded by Bruce Woolley & the Camera Club and then later recorded by The Buggles who went on to have the hit with it and go down in one hit wonder immortality.

7. You wanna stay out with your fancy friends
I'm telling you it's gotta be the end
#4 Don’t Bring Me Down – ELO

ELO is one of my guilty pleasures, not my favorite song by them, but a good one just the same.

8. Well my buddy Jim Bass he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
#5 Gold - John Stewart

This one’s a real toe tapper. Stewart had an interesting career, he was a member of the Kingston Trio (although not an original member) and he wrote The Monkees hit Daydream Believer. This song also features Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

9. Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's don e so far
#25 The Rainbow Connection – Kermit The Frog

Another one that I threw in as a joke, what was I thinking?, And I'm surprised how many people got it right.

10. And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky-tonk just like anything

#4 Sultans of Swing – Dire Straits

One of my all-time favorites groups, this one got it started for them.

These are ones that I wouldn't be able to place, because they weren't really in context to me. TV themes and kid movie songs won't come to me when I'm thinking radio hits. I could probably sing the entire Rainbow Connection song, but not recognize in this game...
