UPS package ripped open on my doorstep...

#1 Post by sunflower » Tue May 05, 2009 5:03 am

This was so weird. I got back from my trip to find two things on/around my front door. One was a door tag from Fed Ex saying they tried to deliver a package that I know to be my computer (signature required). It was from 5/2 and I think it's bizarre they didn't try to redeliver yesterday.

But even weirder, there was a mangled, ripped open package from Dell Software & Peripherals. I instantly thought, great, something was stolen. But for the whole thing being totally ripped apart, my wireless router is still in there in it's perfectly sealed box. The packing list is in there saying that there was only one item. I don't know if anything else was in there that might be missing, the box is about twice the size of the router box and there was no packing material. It was bizarre. I don't know if it happened en route or on my doorstep but why not take it? It has some amount of value. It just seems weird. I thought for sure maybe someone called to get my computer delivered somewhere else but I called Fed Ex and they said a delivery attempt is planned for today.

That's odd - but if you'd been there to sign for the package there might have been some notation about it having been damaged in shipment.

True...although it wasn't "damaged"...the tape was clearly cut with something on one end but then the box looks like it was ripped open by hand, I don't think there is any other way it could have happened. But I would think if someone were going to take it from my doorstep they'd just take it, not open it and then leave it there. I don't know what to think.

That's almost what it looks like! Had there been any cardboard debris around, I would have blamed squirrels.

You might give Dell a call to see if there really was anything else in there besides some advertising. I'm thinking of necessary cable connections or power cords that might be considered part of a single item but were actually separate in the shipping box.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Yes, I'm going to do that...it looks like it's all inclusive and the packing slip says there was 1 item and the UPC number matches and everything, but I want to be sure while I can still file a claim if I need to. I'm just waiting for the caffeine to kick in so that I can have the patience to deal with the overseas phone rep I will get when I call Dell. I called Fed Ex last night when I was exhuasted, to make sure they absolutely were not going to leave the laptop without a signature and what I could do instead (like pick it up) which ended in a heated argument because the guy couldn't understand what I wanted and I was not in a mood to deal with it! Not my finest moment...

I hope this is not the case with you, but I know that theft does happen, whether by the shipper or a neighbor/passerby. I do a fair number of sweepstakes, and I've heard a lot of stories about people getting ripped-open letters or packages for prizes, sometimes with things taken and sometimes not. Clearly some of those things were stolen; some people had this happen to them repeatedly. Sometimes the letters/packages were opened and resealed, often when the letter/package contained an item of low value. However, your router isn't necessarily of low value, so that may not be the case. Maybe the package was just handled roughly. I'm glad your router arrived intact and undamaged.

I ordered my mom a ring she 'just had to have' from QVC. I checked my mail one day and saw the envelope in there, but when I pulled it out, it was completely flat. The ring was not completely flat. The envelope was empty except for a return mailing sticker and a QVC program guide. I wouldn't have thought the ring was my mailman's style, so not sure where it went astray. It was one of those sticky-closure envelopes, and it didn't look damaged at all. I called QVC and they sent out another ring post haste.

We had a similar thing happen at our condo complex a couple years ago at Christmas time. We have parcel boxes in our mail room and someone opened up their box and it was a ring either from QVC or HSN, the package was empty. They went back to the post office to try to figure out what happened and now the post office won't deliver packages to us anymore. But the person was able to get another one from the merchant...to this day we still don't get packages on site, we have to pick them up at the post office. That's why I try to use UPS or Fed Ex over USPS.

If you have an accurate scale, you might be able to tell if something is missing by the weight. I think most shipping labels have the shipped weight posted on them. If the current weight is the same, then you're probably not missing anything.

I would suspect that if there was more than the router in the original shipment, then the packing slip would have to reflect that, as that is how stuff gets "picked" (as in "pick slip") from the warehouse.
