Jesse James
Harlem, GA
Mental Health Specialist

Meredith thinks Jesse is a "combo platter," resembling both the outlaw and the guy married to Sandra Bullock a little. She compliments Jesse on his plaid western-style shirt, and Jesse comments that it's his "good luck shirt" that he wore to the audition for Millionaire, and since it got him noticed enough to get him to the hotseat, it must be lucky.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Jesse's a father of a 17-month-old son, named Jonas. He wanted to name the boy "Jesse" but his wife refused. Meredith explains that Jesse's had to endure proving to everyone he's really named Jesse James since he was 6. That's when he got separated from his parents at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis and the security officers didn't believe him when he told them his name. They announced over the PA "We have a lost child who SAYS he's Jesse James, and if you know who he is...."

Jesse's wife Tricia is in the audience. Meredith says that Jesse's a mental-health representative, and works with soldiers returning from war zones.

Meredith introduces the expert for today, game-show legend Ken Jennings. Ken says he gets more comfortable the more he's on, so they need to have him on another 74 times, and he'll be great.

A. Bedridden B. Mute
C. Claustrophobic D. Blind

Jesse comments as to how he's using all of his lifelines all in a row, but he'd like to ATE (22). Meredith asks Ken if he's "up on his literature," and Ken replies that yeah, he's "feeling comforatble right now." Ken reads the question, smiles and says, "Ya know, I do not know 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle'." He feels bad that he can't help, and says the only way he can narrow it down is to say it doesn't seem likely to be a book about a character who's bedridden.

Jesse comments that he knows he's committed if he uses his DD, but after ruminating, decides to use it anyway (7). His first answer is

I don't know for sure, as the show has yet to air here, but I believe if he lets the clock run down, it's the same as a walk. Since he's down to $1k, I'd assume he was charged a timely incorrect answer.

In this case, there is no walking, since he was halfway through his DD at the time. So whether he let the time run out or answered wrong, he'd end up with $1K.

But the answer had locked in, since he said "Final answer" in time -- just as time ran out -- but was wrong.

No, you're not. Soba was part of a clue. I think that's the only way I knew it. I'd probably ATA as well.
NellyLunatic1980 wrote:$16K: I have NFC on this question. Let's try the audience.
Ditto, and I'd crash and burn along with the player. KJ needs to read more popular novels, as do I, though anything involved with Oprah has cooties to me.

That, and having a "famous name".

It's a shame Jesse couldn't just let the clock run out - he'd have ended up with more money. But since he chose the DD, he'd have gone home with $1K regardless. As for me, I would have had no idea, but since I stlll have all my lifelines, it's time to ATA.

In other words, there's a typo in the transcript. His second, incorrect answer was D.

Does Sandra Bullock's husband qualify as a famous name in his own right?

I think I used to own a duplicate of Jesse's shirt!

I loved this story!
Just after we moved from Oklahoma to Kentucky we went to a discount department store to shop for clothing. Our oldest son, who was three, got separated from us. elwing and I went in different directions to try and find him, when over the PA system a man announced, "Attention, shoppers, we have a lost boy in the jewelry department. His name is [first name][last name] and..." there was a moment of silence and the voice resumed, "I'm sorry, his name is [first name][middle name - said emphatically][last name]." We went to get him, laughing at the insistence that the man include his full name. Perhaps he knew he was going to be in trouble when we found him.

Here's an article and blog entry about Jesse's appearance.

In the end, James came home with $1,000, but says he's ready to play again.

In fact, he says "Deal or No Deal" has a celebrity names week coming up.
Why am I not surprised?

I suppose that would be possible as the "guy married to Sandra Bullock" is a decendant of the outlaw, or so he claims.

For me, this was so easy. That's because I slogged my way through this borefest and it almost made me mute. Once I buy a book, I'll be damned if I'm not going to read it through. The only book I ever quit was Clan of the Cave Bear and I know lots of people love these books, but I just couldn't get into them.

I know a few people who have tried to read Edgar Sawtelle and gave up on it. It may have sold a lot of copies due to Oprah, but I wonder how many people actually read it through.

Not me -- I'm not gonna pick it up.

The Earth's Children series got a little more tiring with every book. Clan of the Cave Bear was a great read because of the painstaking research, and that's why I continued reading. I'm looking forward to the sixth and (hopefully) last book.

Nevermind.

Earth's Children is a series of speculative alternative historical fiction novels written by Jean M. Auel set circa 25,000 before present. There are five novels in the series so far and a sixth is being written. Auel has mentioned in recent interviews that she now believes she will write a seventh novel, which will be the final in the series. Previously she planned to end the series at the sixth book according to her initial outline for the back story of the first three books.
