Today is the beginning of Kwanzaa. Each of the seven days has a principle.
Dec. 26 - Umoja (Unity)
Dec. 27 - Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
Dec. 28 - Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
Dec. 29 - Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
Dec. 30 - Nia (Purpose)
Dec. 31 - Kuumba (Creativity)
Jan. 1 - Imani (Faith)
Kwanzaa was created by an American named Ron Everett (also known as Maulana Karenga or Ron Karenga) in the 60s. It is a combination of East African harvest festivals and Karenga's Seven Principles of Blackness.
The name comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza" meaning "first fruits".
Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.
