Wow, nasty question, an "either you know it or you don't" type. They seem to be going back to classic trivia-style questions a lot for $25K. FWIW, I did know it, but then TV trivia from the '80's on back is a strong point.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Man these two contestants just made me sick. Why use double-dip when you could've used Ask The Expert. I'm sure Ogi would've known the answers for both $25,000 questions. Also it pays to watch a lot of TV becuase I knew the answer to Patrice's question before the answers came up. I nearly lost my voice yelling at the TV screen.

I knew this from a M*A*S*H trivia book I read back in the 80s.

She picked the two oldest, which is exactly what the question writer wanted. :(

Isn't this the second "Marley & Me" question this week?

$16K: The "-genesis" obviously narrows it down to either A or D. I'll Double Dip on those two.

$25K: I can narrow it down to C and D. Let's ask the audience first and see if they have it. Ask Ogi afterward if they don't know it.

I'm not sure where I learned this (possibly one of the anniversary specials) but I precalled the answer.

Nihil obstat®. Patrice is the third contestant to "go for the gusto" even though it ended up being a disaster.

Parthenogenesis doesn't actually mean "reproduce asexually" - otherwise bacteria, amoebae and other such biological organisms would be included. It actually means that a female is able to become pregnant without the assistance of a male - an egg begins dividing without sperm.

Yes, I'm avoiding the theological question.

Of course, he did! And Patrice did exactly what she needed to for an effective Google search: spell the word and the rest of the question doesn't matter!

Kind of, yes: 'parathenogenesis' literally means 'virgin origin' or 'virgin beginning' (Greek 'parthenos' is 'virgin,' the Parthenon in Athens and in other cities was the temple of Athena, the virgin goddess, who was herself was the result of activity but she was not exactly 'born' as a result of any sexual activity, what happened was that Zeus boffed Metis, and then he heard about some prophecy that Metis would have a child who would become greater than the child's father, and to forestall this, Zeus swallowed Metis, but he later had a really nasty headache, and Tylenol hadn't yet been invented, so Hephaestus or someone chopped Zeus's head open with an axe, and out popped Athena). Now, where was I... oh, yes, parthenogenesis. As a practical matter, parthenogenesis does not really mean so much, 'reproduce asexually', so much as it means, the mom didn't put out.
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

And last week's House rerun was last year's Christmas episode, where House tells a man that his cheating wife wasn't really cheating, but the first recorded case of parthenogenesis. He was lying, of course.

But the Christmas episode aired after Patrice's episode taped. :(

Quite true, but I happened to have just watched it last night (it re-aired Monday, I think), so I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition.

I strongly suspect Ogi would not have known the answer to this one. He's been quite open about the fact that pop culture is a relative weakness of his. --Bob

I was in the audience for this show and the next one. When Meredith told Patrice she was right, she made typing motions with her fingers. I just watched the show, and they also showed Meredith doing this on screen. --Bob
