$500: I'm surprised that most of the banter on this question got past the censors.

$2K: "Nice hat" was a nasty distractor for such an early question.

Nihil obstat® for me.

Ouch! Scott leaves as a thousandaire because he doesn't get a "popular" math joke.

I wonder if any reasoning out got cut from the tape?

Reminds me of the good old days of The Old Phone Game®. I can just hear Fred saying, "Put these TV sitcoms in the order in which they debuted, starting with the most recent."

Does anyone care to speculate why Scott went for A? It wasn't that he didn't take the time to think about it.

He was apparently thinking, not unreasonably, of an 8 as a 0 with a round hat on top, rather than as a 0 with a belt cinched tight around its waist. A nasty question for $2000, usually a total gimme level.

A round hat? Really? Not familiar with the joke as it sounds as though you would need to be a real math nerd or perhaps a fourth grader to be familiar with it but it didn't seem that hard.

Despite being familiar with too many math jokes, I had never heard this one before. Nonetheless, I thought it was easy to figure out if one just took one's time.

A sample of math jokes (in order of increasing complexity of the math):

Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Spoiler
Because 7 ate 9
What's the square root of 69?
Spoiler
Eight something
What's the integral of d(cabin)/cabin?
Spoiler
log cabin + C
What's purple and commutes?
Spoiler
an Abelian grape
I can hear the groans already. :)

2K: "Nice Hat!" works for me. But I've never heard this. Sounds like a kindergarten joke, & their minds are a little diff than mine. Do I really ATA here & avoid being a thousandaire????? We'll never know!
