Another Moronic New Year's Shooting Death in Atlanta
For the second year in a row, celebratory New Year's Eve gunfire has resulted in a death here in Atlanta. This year, a Norcross man was killed in his house by a bullet coming down through the roof of his house right after midnight on New Year's Eve. Actually, two bullets came in the house... a few seconds earlier one came through a window but didn't hit anyone. Last year, it was a four-year-old boy who was shot and killed at a church service.
Mrs. SSS make sure we are out of the way of any windows each year, but I'm not sure how well built our walls and roof are. Hopefully, we'll never have to find out.

Shannon's law: A statement defining the theoretical maximum rate at which error-free digits can be transmitted over a bandwidth-limited channel in the presence of noise, usually expressed in the form C = W log2(1 + S /N ), where C is the channel capacity in bits per second, W is the bandwidth in hertz, and S /N is the signal-to-noise ratio. (188) Note: Error-correction codes can improve the communications performance relative to uncoded transmission, but no practical error correction coding system exists that can closely approach the theoretical performance limit given by Shannon's law.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Some people's brains seem to fall out when it comes to their guns.
Our first house sat on a nice piece of land in a rural area. A hunter came one day and asked if he could hunt in the (very small) wooded area of our property. It was nice that he asked rather than just went out there and did it, and he was very polite when we sent him on his way. But... the most distant part of the wooded area was no more than 500 feet behind our house, not exactly a secluded hunting preserve.
I think a lot of these guys believe that they will NEVER miss a shot, and have no idea how far or how fast a bullet can travel.

Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

An update on this case. Two neighbors of the dead man, a father and stepson, were arrested on January 3 and charged with manslaughter. They shot off a gun from their front porch at least 31 times New Years Eve but claim they shot into the ground, not in the air. As of yet, ballistics tests have not come back, and their defense attorney pointed out that police received 75 complaints in the area of gunfire that night. Even if their gun killed the man, it will probably be impossible to determine who fired the fatal shot. The two are out on $50,000 bond.
