There are various translations of this quote, but I find the one the question writers used here unsatisfactory*. Having a place to stand would have done him no good at all, without that lever and fulcrum!
δος μοι που στω και κινω την γην (Dos moi pou sto kai kino tayn gayn)

* Doric Greek: δῶς μοι πᾶ στῶ καὶ τὰν γᾶν κινάσω
* Give me the place to stand, and I shall move the earth.
o Said to be his assertion in demonstrating the principle of the lever; as quoted by Pappus of Alexandria, Synagoge, Book VIII, c. AD 340.
* Variant translations:
* Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the world.
* Give me a fulcrum, and I shall move the world.
* Give me a stick long enough and a pivot and I shall move the world.

*It may be an acceptable literal translation (I don't speak Greek, ancient or modern) but the context is missing, for anyone unfamiliar with the quote.

Flashback answer B. Danica McKellar
Coincidentally, there was an article in the NY Times just yesterday about Natalie Portman having studied neuroscience at Harvard and being in the Intel science competition as a high school student, and the article mentioned both Danica McKellar and her magnetism and Mayim Bialik, who has a PhD in neuroscience (or something like that). Also Hedy Lamarr, who was in the most recent grogangame.

Note to Charlie Sheen re Hedy Lamarr: Frequency Hopping is not what you think.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
