It's January and I'm in a t-shirt and went coatless to the bus stop, where my daughter boarded the bus in short sleeves and a skirt. I didn't make her bring a jacket.

Australian elections

TONY Abbott, written off as "unelectable", has led the Coalition to one of its biggest wins.
This is a victory over a cultural elite that mocked him and Labor, which vilified him as a "misogynist"and bigot.
It is particularly a victory over the green movement, which Abbott fought from the day he won the Opposition leadership four years ago.
He beat Malcolm Turnbull by one vote on a promise to fight Labor's plan to price carbon dioxide emissions.
Labor, which gave us the carbon tax it promised not to, has now been smashed for cheating voters with this useless hit on power bills, as well as for recklessly spending borrowed billions and weakening our borders.
Labor deserved to lose but it took Abbott to spot where it was weakest.
Abbott used the carbon tax to destroy Labor and will now destroy the tax itself.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

This is too delicious to let it just pass by.

Summer in the Antarctic

http://www.itv.com/news/story/2013-12-2 ... ip-rescue/
"A decision has been reached to evacuate 52 passengers and four crew members by helicopter from China's Xue Long ship, should the weather allow," the news agency reported, citing a Russian foreign ministry statement.
not just some tourists
A month ago the mission of the $1.5m expedition was “to answer questions about climate change”. Now the ABC describes the Australasian expedition as “a Russian ship stuck in sea ice in Antarctica.” The BBC has a reporter on board, and it only took 8 hours for the news to reach the BBC feed. Who is spinning the message to neutralize an embarrassing story then?
Let there be no doubt, the mission was to document and record scientific changes in Antarctica and to broadcast that to the world. Most scientific missions don’t have a dedicated media team, but this one named a staff of five journalists. There is a journalist and a documentary maker from the Guardian as well as a senior producer from the Science Unit at the BBC world service. (See the media list.) If they’d discovered less sea ice, fewer penguins, or big cracks, we know the images would be all over the mass media and it would be evidence for “climate change”.

Considering that the last four attempts to bring this dead horse to life have been the work of a single person, can we now consider it a form of online masturbation?

think of it as truth in advertising, no one has to click on this thread and if they do they know what to expect. Clearly everyone on the bored has their own little quirks and mine, while perhaps boring is not secret or subtle.

and give me some credit for waiting 4 days to start with this.

Much like Birnam Wood, Florida mangroves are marching north. (Well, maybe not exactly like Birnam Wood.) --Bob

As is typical of the kind of hysterical attribution of any change to catastrophic global warming there is an alternate explanation of the resurgence of mangroves in eastern Florida

Impoundment flooding, used as a form of mosquito control, resulted in a 76 percent reduction in mangrove wetlands along the Indian River Lagoon. On the west coast, roadway development has killed thousands of acres of mangroves. Partial impounding by roads and fill for development has killed mangroves in places like Clam Bay in Collier County. When these formerly anaerobic mangrove soils are drained, they experience dramatic increases in acidity (ph=3.5-5.0) due to the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds in the soils which can kill all vegetation including the mangroves within the impoundment.
The Subcommittee on Managed Marshes, an interagency task force, was formed to address management problems of mosquito impoundments (Indian River Lagoon NEP 1996). Under the guidance of this task force, improvements in management techniques were developed and implemented in the mid-1980s by local mosquito control districts. Known as Rotational Impoundment Management (RIM), these techniques involve some form of rotational schedule for alternating the flooding-and-drying cycles of impounded marshes. One RIM alternative consists of the installation of culverts through the dikes to allow natural tidal flows across these impounded wetlands and to provide fishery resources access to and from the diked marshes.

The story linked above certainly gives the impression that we're not talking about a resurgence of mangroves that used to have them but lost them (which is what the passage quoted(?) above implies), but about the spread of mangroves to areas that had never before had them. Are you saying that's not accurate? --Bob

According to the paper the study began with the LANDSAT images from the mid 80s. Which is the same time as the change in the mosquito control program began. No mention of the mosquito control program appears in the paper nor is there a reference to the decline in mangrove habitat due to the control program

It's been changed to "Climate Change" now, because it's not getting warmer anymore, and it's embarrassing to have record cold temperatures whenever Al Gore goes someplace to lecture.

TIMOTHY WIRTH: What we did is that we went in the night before and opened all the windows, I will admit, right, so that the air conditioning wasn’t working inside the room. Took a first look at Bangladesh and global warming over at Eye on the Land.

Increasing salinity intrusions in Bangladesh, especially in southwest Bangladesh, are often cited as evidence for global warming.

When one looks at academic research, this may not be exactly the smoking gun evidence that it first appears to be.
