Taking a rare mental health day

#1 Post by vettech » Fri Aug 19, 2011 7:44 am

Now I'm not shy about calling in when I'm truly violently ill. Nor do I have any qualms about leaving early if the bulk of my work is done and I'm under the weather. But if I'm just feeling kinda icky, I usually at least make an attempt to go in. Today I said screw it and called in. I feel a little guilty, but it's not like I'm running off to the beach or something - I really don't feel well. Just not so sick I couldn't buck up if I really had to.

I think the colleague that I have dubbed 'The Princess' has taken more than a day of mental health vacation.

She apparently went to India on a family holiday and has yet to return more than 3 weeks later. She has only been with the company for 2-3 years so only has 2 weeks of vacation. I knew she had taken some time earlier in the year as well.

Reports are that she did contact our manager about a week ago by email saying she could not leave the country due to 'flu-like symptoms' and has not been heard from since.

I think we are about to start an office pool on whether she comes back at all.

We have one of those. I've lost track of how many months she's been out this time. Her last "hiatus" was nearly a year. This time we're pretty much under the assumption she's never coming back. The most annoying part is they're still holding a desk for her. I understand people have problems, but if you have no intention of coming back have the courtesy to say so.

Feel better, VT.

Maybe we can meet up later for a game of FB BAM... (alterior motive: perhaps there's a chance I can beat you while you're under the weather) ;)

The best Superintendent (of Education) I have worked for told us multiple times that it is just as important to take a mental health day when you need it as it is to take day when you are physically safe. I have been on our Superintendent's Council for 4 of the 5 Superintendents I have worked for and she was the only one who ever said anything like that. She was great.
I felt the change

Time meant nothing and never would again
