RIP King Abdullah (Re: RIP Crown Prince Sultan)

#1 Post by jarnon » Mon Oct 24, 2011 2:31 pm

The fifteenth son of the founder of Saudi Arabia, King Abdul Aziz, he was first in line to succeed his brother, King Abdullah. He died in New York, where he was hospitalized for cancer. He was 80.

According to Wikipedia, King Abdul Aziz had about 35 sons. Five of his sons have succeeded him as King, and another one will probably become the new Crown Prince. They're going to have to come up with a new method of succession before long.

With 35 sons, surely he's had a grandson or two.*

*I'd say grandchild, but I'm sure the merest suggestion of that would be far ahead if its time in Saudi Arabia. :|

Did the old guy name all his sons Nayef?

Kind of has a George Foreman vibe to it. Except without the grill.

Bookmark this thread. I have a feeling it's going to get a lot of mileage.

If they need a newly crowned king, LA has a few of them including Dwight King.

If tradition is followed and 76-year-old Prince Salman becomes Crown Prince, this thread will pop up again before long.

The family seems pretty long-lived, so I wouldn't be in a rush for Salman to die.

Update: Both King Abdullah (age 91) and Crown Prince Salman (age 78) are in poor health. So they royal family named Prince Muqrin, their youngest brother, as second in line. After Prince Muqrin, they'll have to move on to the next generation.

King Abdullah has passed away. Crown Prince Salman becomes King, and Prince Muqrin is the new Crown Prince. Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, 55, Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister, is now second in line; that will end the succession of sons of King Abdul Aziz.

Huge shake-up in the Saudi royal family:

Saudi King Salman appoints Prince Mohammed bin Nayef as new crown prince-state TV
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz on Wednesday sacked his younger half brother as crown prince and appointed his nephew, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, as the new heir apparent, state television said.

He also appointed his son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as deputy crown prince, and replaced veteran foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal with the kingdom's Washington ambassador Adel al-Jubeir.
King Salman is one of the Sudairi Seven, the sons of King Abdulaziz and his favorite wife, Hassa bint Ahmed. Crown Prince Mohammed and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed are both grandsons of Hassa, but Prince Muqrin and Prince Saud aren't descended from her.

Most important, this means the next King will be a grandson, not a son, of King Abdulaziz.

Another big shake-up in conservative Saudi Arabia: King Salman promoted his son Prince Mohammed to Crown Prince, displacing his nephew Prince Mohammed bin Nayef.
