She didn't even try to name one state that bordered Mexico, before resorting to the lifeline. (Granted, if all she could remember was Texas, it wouldn't have helped, but two probably would have done it.)

Well, the detail of the particular sergeant given the order certainly was obscure. Aside from that, though, German troops didn't get to London, American troops didn't fight them in Greece, and the Germans pulled out of Paris without any serious resistance. Italy, on the other hand, was a hard-fought battle to the very end.

Besides that, the Leaning Tower isn't all that big, so a sergeant (in command of a tank or a small demolition team, for example) probably would have been able to do the job (which I gather he never did). The Eiffel Tower, OTOH, is big enough to require a much larger effort.

Sergeant Weckstein has written two books about WWII on the Italian front, the second of which was just published last year. I'm guessing that's where the question writers found this info.

The unusual occurrence of so many "C" answers notwithstanding, I probably would have chosen the same answer Carolyn did. A little googling shows that Mr. Weckstein is still alive and has written a book about his wartime experiences.
