She then announced it was a military man's turn. She called out Sam's name and he came down from the top of three visible rows.
Sam said he was "shocked" to get the invitation. His son has been calling him every 2-3 days and asked him since Sam told him he would be his lifeline.
Mere said that lifeline is gone and it's been a while since Sam watched the show.
Sam says he spent 27 years in the Army and about 17 as a drill sergeant. Mere asked Sam how he becomes one, as he seems like a mild-mannered guy.
Sam said they normally pick candidates for performance and physical ability. They told him his fitness was good so he was selected.
Mere asked Sam to show his serious face and was impressed.
