We had weather-related issues with yesterday's show (a brief interruption in electric service threw off the recorder so I didn't get it).

Too bad...15 minutes in a quarter, 12 signs of the Zodiac, 13 stripes in the flag, and 14 lines in a sonnet, and 14 days in a fortnight.

I remember learning of spanners from Neutron Tide a story by Aurthur C. Clarke with a really bad pun.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Lack of basic trivia knowledge costs her another 9K and a shot at more. Any basic trivia geek who ever played the phone game would likely know how long a fortnight is and even if you don't know how many lines there are in a sonnet the rest are easy to figure out leaving only one option.

Agreed. Furthermore, "spanner" is common enough in British parlance that I think it should be familiar to anyone who has watched at least one BBC television program (on PBS, if not on BBC) or read so much as a single British novel written more recently than, say, Pride and Prejudice.

This web site apparently allows unmoderated comments.

She got the fast track to the HS, apparently:

[About two weeks later] I got a call from the show that said they were interested in having me come out (to New York).
