They tell me it's 30 degrees cooler

#1 Post by hermillion » Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:55 pm

in San Julian, Bolivia, which is where I'll be this time next week. My church sponsors frequent medical and/or construction mission trips and I've always wanted to participate. Unfortunately, they usually seem to travel in April or October, and those months are impossible for a teacher! When this one was announced I filled out my application immediately, and now I'm busy packing!

There is no electricity or running water in the village, and we're sleeping -- under mosquito netting -- on the floor of the local church. I've had Yellow fever, Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis, and HepA shots, a round of oral Typhoid vaccine, and will take Malaria pills beginning this week. I DARE anything to bite me!

We leave on 7/13 and return on 7/23. All good thoughts and prayers are gratefully accepted!

You need to bring back some hats to prove you were there. Otherwise, no one will Bolivia!

Safe trip Hermillion!

Can you change in some Georges? That would be a great hit or more!

Wow. I'm truly jealous, but I can't complain since I'm sure I could have the same opportunity if I looked. Please have a wonderful time, and remember, as the kids say, "Pics or it didn't happen!"

A few points --

-- the Georges are likely a no-go. We've been told that the only $$ we should take are NEW $20s, as that's the preferred currency for exchange. I may take a few singles and see if they are spendable on an individual basis. We will have a few hours in Santa Cruz on the return trip to do some shopping. Who knows where/when they may turn up.

-- do you need a hat, Ed? That brim style does nothing for me, but I'll see what I can do! :D

-- I'll definitely be loaded with pics! A major part of my assignment in this crew is PR with the local kids. I've gathered a couple hundred small give-away toys, crayons and coloring pages, etc. But, my BIG project is taking photos of the kids, and then printing them out with a battery-powered printer that was my Mother's Day/birthday gift from Number One Son. Most, if not all, of these kiddos have never seen a photograph of themselves. I'm loaded up with materials to print 400 photos, and am SO excited for this opportunity!
