2/29 ANSWERS/POINTS

#29 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Tue Mar 04, 2008 4:49 am

With two karaoke game shows on TV now, it’s only fair that we play the Bored version of karaoke. Rickey Minor and the band will be playing songs from a variety of decades and genres. Once the band stops and the words disappear from the screen, you’ll have to complete the lyrics. Just like on both shows, the lyrics have to be exact to get credit. The first 15 songs will have between 3-6 words missing. The bonus song will have significantly more words missing, but will be worth 5 points.

Warm up those singing voices... and let’s play!

1. “What’d I Say”, Ray Charles (1959) - 5 missing words

Hey mama, don't you treat me wrong
Come and love your daddy all night long
All right now
Hey hey
All right
See the girl with the diamond ring
She knows how to shake that thing
All right now now now
Hey hey, hey hey
Tell your mama, tell your pa
I'm gonna send you back to Arkansas

2. “Sweet Dreams”, Patsy Cline (1963) - 3 missing words

Sweet dreams of you
Every night I go through
Why can't I forget you and start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams about you?
You don't love me, it's plain
I should know I'll never wear your ring

3. “That’s Life”, Frank Sinatra (1967) - 5 missing words

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
A poet, a pawn, and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race

4. “Honky Tonk Women”, the Rolling Stones (1969) - 5 missing words

I met a gin-soaked barroom queen in Memphis
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride
She had to heave me right across her shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind

5. “Kodachrome”, Paul Simon (1973) - 3 missing words

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day

6. “Nobody Does It Better”, Carly Simon (1977) - 6 missing words

Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest
Nobody does it half as good as you, baby, you're the best
I wasn't lookin' but somehow you found me
I tried to hide from your love light
But like heaven above me, the spy who loved me
Is keeping all my secrets safe tonight

7. “9 to 5 , Dolly Parton (1980) - 4 missing words

Tumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawnin', stretchin', try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets, the traffic starts jumpin’

8. “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, Wham (1984) - 5 missing words

You put the boom boom into my heart
You send my soul sky-high when your lovin' starts
Jitterbug into my brain
Goes bang bang bang til my feet do the same

9. “Let’s Talk About Sex”, Salt-N-Pepa (1991) - 4 missing words

Let's talk about sex for now
To the people at home or in the crowd
It keeps coming up anyhow
Don't decoy, avoid, or make void the topic
Cuz that ain't gonna stop it
Now we talk about sex on the radio and video shows
Many will know anything goes
Let's tell it how it is and how it could be
How it was, and of course, how it should be

10. “Two Princes”, the Spin Doctors (1993) - 6 missing words

One, two, princes kneel before you--that's what I said now
Princes, princes who adore you--just go ahead now
One has diamonds in his pockets--that sounds great now
This one said he wants to buy you lockets

11. “Always Be My Baby”, Mariah Carey (1996) - 4 missing words

You'll always be a part of me
I'm part of you indefinitely
Boy, don't you know you can't escape me
Ooh darling, 'cause you'll always be my baby
And we'll linger on
Time can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me

12. “You’re Still the One”, Shania Twain (1998) - 6 missing words

Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come, my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday
They said, I bet they'll never make it
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong

13. “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of”, U2 (2001) - 4 missing words

I'm not afraid of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't already heard
I'm just trying to find a decent melody
A song that I can sing in my own company

14. “This Love”, Maroon 5 (2004) - 5 missing words

This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice 'cause I won't say goodbye anymore

15. “Hip Hop Police”, Chamillionaire (2007) - 4 missing words

With so much drama in the industry
Hip hop police are listening
Be careful or you'll be history
Looks like another unsolved mystery
It's murder
Ah, it's murder
Yeah, it's murder
Somebody tell 'em it's murda
Murder was the case and they blamed me

BONUS: “When Will I Be Loved?”, Linda Ronstadt (1975) - 11 missing words

I've been cheated
Been mistreated
When will I be loved?
I've been put down
I've been pushed 'round
When will I be loved?
When I find a new man
That I want for mine
He always breaks my heart in two,
It happens every time

Well, the good news is that almost everybody struggled with this set of questions, so there wasn't too much movement in the standings. Greyhound came out smelling like a rose with the top score (17) and the lead. And for the first time this month, a few people went for humor points. :-)

Well that was certainly an unexpected bonus!

I am very politely calling shenanigans. I was a pretty big Spin Doctors fan back in the day. I still come in last anyway, so not a biggie, but www.SpinDoctors.com says the correct lyrics are:

Two Princes
One, two, princes kneel before you
(that's what I said, now)
Princes, Princes who adore you
(Just go ahead, now)
One has diamonds in his pockets
(that's some bread, now)
This one, he wants to buy you rockets
(Ain't in his head, now)

I'm thinking they know the words. ;)

I knew this was "name" as well as I knew my own name (ring doesn't even rhyme!). Could I be mistaken? I also saw somebody else (hermillion, I think) said name as well, so it couldn't have been some crazy flashback from 'nam.

I don't visit lyrics sites (everytime I find viruses on the computer at my mom's house it's after the kids have been on lyrics sites), so I had to wait until my brother got off work last night to ask him.

We ended up figuring out that the original hit version by Faron Young (as well as Don Gibson, who wrote it) was "you'll never wear my name". When Tammy Wynette did it, she changed gender by making it "I'll never wear your name". I have no idea why the Cline version was changed.

I'm not asking for a change in points, because you did specify the Cline version. I just think it's odd that they changed that particular word and funny how I automatically associate this song with Faron Young. Not so odd, because my dad's band did it, so that the one I always heard.

The upside of which was my brother and I had a great conversation about one of our favourite subjects, which is BITD. (Tbone can probably commiserate with me on this.) When we were kids, my brother and I had the job of transcibers. Whenever my dad's band added a song to their set list, it was our job to take the record (if we were lucky) or the reel to reel that my dad taped off the radio and listen to a song 28506830633 times, writing down all the words on a yellow legal tablet so they'd have the right lyrics. Things are so easy now what with all the internets and such.

Anyway, just a fun nostalgia trip, which was totally worth getting the question wrong!

Ha! Yet another thing that the Fanster and I have in common. I even own the Patsy Cline GH CD, and went back to listen to it after seeing other responses with "ring" in them.

Not sure which words Willie wrote, but I agree with Faron that "name" rhymes slightly better with "plain" than "ring" does. Even if you do have a Tennessee twang.

I'm sorry, I don't know why I was thinking hermillion instead of mrkelley, must be the double L thing.

So I guess that you, Confessor and I are the only Faron fans in the bunch.

I think there are only 4 songs in the history of everything that Willie Nelson didn't write. JJ Cale wrote three of them and Don Gibson wrote this one. He wrote a lot of Faron songs, though.

Now I'm confused again. Are you saying Don Gibson wrote "Crazy?" I coulda sworn it was Willie.

No, but he did write Sweet Dreams. Ha!

I have fond memories of Crazy. It was one of the first songs that I worked out my own runs and stuff for on the bass. It has a beautiful chord progression.

A fun story that I read recently and was saving for later this month in LS: According to Willie, he originally wrote Crazy as "Stupid". If you sing it that way, it's hilarious and very Willie.

It's like the Pansy O'Hara of music.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Dirty Willie? I love his songs, I love his writing, I love his philosophy and I especially love his voice. I even have a "Vote for Willie" 1980 bumper sticker.

Oy.

I blame all the grading I've been doing lately. Good thing I"m only corrupting the minds of future generations this week, not operating heavy machinery or anything.

I love "Crazy," too, but its funny -- all I hear is the tinkling piano.

Deciphering Stones lyrics was the worst. Marble-mouthed Mick made it very difficult for me. Half of the lyrics I sang for Stones songs wound up being mumbled approximations of the vowel sounds. I don't think anybody knew the difference.

If you've ever seen the part of the movie "Jumpin' Jack Flash" where Whoopi Goldberg is trying to transcribe the lyrics to "JJ Flash", growing increasingly pissed off while doing so, then you've seen me trying to "get" what Mick was singing on a number of songs.
