The eyes are going: I overlooked the Lewis in the puzzle: 48. EMMANUEL Edward G. Robinson goes with 42. John LEWIS to link up with 21. SUSAN CLARK

George Luks might connect to Sloan and J Edgar Hoover, since John Sloan was another painter in the Ashcan School.

Hmmm... One point of the puzzle is that the solution uses the 'real' first names of people who are better known by a fake first name or by a nickname. #8 Zeppo Marx's real first name was Herbert. That is such a perfect much with #32 J. Edgar Hoover that I wonder if HERBERT HOOVER should be here? But I don't know where he matches up.

Frank, once in a great while I can help with some answers to your puzzles. And once in a great while I am even correct. But, when it comes to the Tangredi, I get a sharp pain behind both eyes. Anyhoo, I just wanted to mention how much I enjoy your efforts. Lb13 would of course know the answer to this but I do not believe we have ever had over 1000 "views" before in a thread.

You have added so much enjoyment to our bored. Thanks.

Hap (Henry) Arnold plus Simon Cowell gives us Henry Cowell, who was Charles Ives' mentor.

Good job on the consolidation!

However, there is one important part of the original instructions that got dropped out:

"Four names will be used twice, each in two different capacities."

Then there's my own unwritten law: Never use somebody for a last name who's related to the hidden person. That would be cheating on my part!

Whoops! We did forget all about that. I'll edit the most recent consolidation to reflect that.

Ok, ok... I'll try to add a couple to jump-start this puppy back to life.

Assuming Charles MERRILL is right for #9, he would combine with #52, ROBERT Parker (Butch Cassidy) to make ROBERT MERRILL, who would no doubt go with #65, RENATA TEBALDI.

#8 Zeppo Marx's real name is HERBERT, which goes with #32, J. Edgar HOOVER to make HERBERT HOOVER, though I'm not sure with whom he would match up on this list. But this does make a legit second use for both of these names.

And is there anyone else famous with the last name BRADLEE who might fit one of the unsolved clues here? Because the "real" name of Sweeney Todd is BENJAMIN Barker, which would provide a match for Woodward and Bernstein.
Bazinga!

Harry Longabaugh + Gerard Manley Hopkins could equal Harry Hopkins, confidante of FDR, but I don't see anyone definitely associated with him here.

I think Harry Hopkins can go with Eleanor Roosevelt.

Wasn't it their friendship that was instrumental in developing the New Deal programs?

Ok, not much of a jump start, lol. So in the interest of finishing this one (the better to be able to begin a new puzzle sooner?), here's a new consolidation, including a couple more I looked up.

Dr. CHARLES JACKSON was a rival of Dr. WILLIAM MORTON, also claiming to have discovered the use of ether as an anesthetic. FRANK WILLS was the security guard who discovered the break-in at the Watergate. I also confirmed that WILLIAM FARRAR is correct (and in the process, discovered his real first name was Frederic!).

Adding the two new matches, there are now 25 complete triples, plus 2 partials that are most likely correct as far as they go, all things considered. That leaves one triple as yet untouched, and four names yet to be used -- including one unsolved clue that almost has to involve the missing "Florence". (Even better if it also matches with Herbert Hoover...)

Game #115: False Starts

Identify the 80 people indicated in the clues below. Match them up into 28 triples according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Four names will be used twice, each in two different capacities.

In honor of last month’s holiday, five of the people in the clues below were residents of the White House at one time or another.

Completed triples (25):
2. CHARLES Edouard Jeanneret-Gris (Le Corbusier) + 72. Robert JACKSON = CHARLES JACKSON, goes with 22. WILLIAM MORTON
4. FRANCIS Scott Fitzgerald + 69. Roger BACON = FRANCIS BACON, goes with 54. JAMES I STUART
6. MARGARET Margot Fonteyn + 77. Ernest RUTHERFORD = MARGARET RUTHERFORD, goes with 17. JANE MARPLE
14. ANNA Eleanor Roosevelt + 45. John HELD Jr. = ANNA HELD, goes with 62. FLORENZ ZIEGFELD
15. JOSEPH Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) + 30. Jedediah SMITH = JOSEPH SMITH, goes with 55. BRIGHAM YOUNG
18. WILLIAM Somerset Maugham + 27. Roger SHERMAN = WILLIAM SHERMAN, goes with 59. GEORGE "PAP" THOMAS
23. RICHARD Buckminster Fuller + 78. Bo BURTON = RICHARD BURTON, goes with 50. JOHN SPEKE
24. VIRGINIA Patsy Cline + 25. Harold JOHNSON = VIRGINIA JOHNSON, goes with 46. WILLIAM MASTERS
32. JOHN Edgar Hoover + 56. Alfred P. SLOAN = JOHN SLOAN, goes with 66. GEORGE LUKS
40. STEPHEN Grover Cleveland + 28. Marjory DOUGLAS = STEPHEN DOUGLAS, goes with 1. ABRAHAM LINCOLN
44. ROY Halston Frowick + 34. Dominique WILKINS = ROY WILKINS, goes with 10. W.E.B. DU BOIS
47. HELEN Beatrix Potter + 29. Hubert KELLER = HELEN KELLER, goes with 60. ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL
48. EMMANUEL Edward G. Robinson + 42. John LEWIS = EMMANUEL LEWIS, goes with 21. SUSAN CLARK
51. EDWARD “Duke” Ellington + 26. William LEAR = EDWARD LEAR, goes with 70. THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
52. ROBERT Parker (Butch Cassidy) + 9. Charles MERRILL = ROBERT MERRILL, goes with 65. RENATA TEBALDI
53. HARRY Longabaugh (The Sundance Kid) + 33. Gerard Manley HOPKINS = HARRY HOPKINS, goes with 14. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
58. LAWRENCE "Yogi" Berra + 31. Jeremy TAYLOR = LAWRENCE TAYLOR, goes with 3. PHIL SIMMS
63. DAVID Henry Thoreau + 39. Brit HUME = DAVID HUME, goes with 5. GEORGE BERKELEY
64. WALTER "Red” Barber + 75. Ishmael REED = WALTER REED, goes with 7. CARLOS FINLAY
67. THELMA Pat Nixon + 38. Sweeney TODD = THELMA TODD, goes with 8. ZEPPO MARX
68. MALCOLM Scott Carpenter + 57. Mary MCDOWELL = MALCOLM MCDOWELL, goes with 36. LINDSAY ANDERSON
74. HENRY “Hap” Arnold + 16. Simon COWELL = HENRY COWELL, goes with 37. CHARLES IVES
76. FRANK “Gary” Cooper + 49. Helen WILLS = FRANK WILLS, goes with 20. CARL BERNSTEIN and BOB WOODWARD
79. JAMES Paul McCartney + 61. Thomas WOLFE = JAMES WOLFE, goes with 13. LOUIS JOSEPH DE MONTCALM
80. THOMAS Woodrow Wilson + 41. John DEWEY = THOMAS DEWEY, goes with 12. LUCKY LUCIANO

Partials (2):
? FLORENCE ? + 35. James CHADWICK = FLORENCE CHADWICK, goes with 19. GERTRUDE EDERLE
8. HERBERT “Zeppo” Marx = 32. J. Edgar HOOVER = HERBERT HOOVER, goes with…?

This far along into the puzzle, looking things up is perfectly fine (I did, too). Thanks, Catfish!

Regarding William Farrar: I guess maybe I screwed this one up if you've actually confirmed that as the right answer. So let me just say I was thinking of Cardinal Newman, and his great book The Idea of a University. And that should give you one of the obvious pairings right there.

Frank: I don't think you screwed up, but I do think that Farra matches the clue fairly well. When I was looking stuff up, though, it was clear that Farrar and Newman each wrote famously and extensively on the idea of a liberal education. I think perhaps Newman might fit the clue a little better, since his main calling was as a cleric.

In any case, that means we've got a Paul Newman (*paired with Butch Cassidy) and our Florence, to finish her up. I also think Herbert Hoover could easily be paired with George Marshall.

Does that mean we are finished?

Well, I didn't think of a Hoover/Marshall connection, but 2/3 of this trio is what I had in mind....

Hoover lived so long, and interacted with so many famous people, that there are a lot of people he COULD be matched with. I"m sure I will have a V8 moment here very soon.

Don't knock yourself out. You're right, there are probably a lot of people Herbert Hoover could be matched with. But I didn't use Herbert Hoover. If I had, he would have been matched with somebody whose connection to Herb was not obscure.

My fault. I apologize.

Ah, so the V8 moment comes from the fact that I was barking up the wrong tree with the Herbert Hoover match. That means the match should be Herbert Marx with George Marshall to make Herbert Marshall. Unfortunately, I can't find anyone to match with him, either. But I'm getting pretty cross-eyed by now, so I'm going to go to bed for tonight.

Whatever the final outcome, Frank, I would just like to say that this was one of your finest puzzles. Very difficult to work out, as evidenced by the length of time it's been running, and also by how little I was able to contribute, even though I was monitoring it nearly every day.
