Transcript 03/07/2008 - Charlie Esser (carryover contestant)

#1 Post by BBTranscriptTeam » Sat Mar 08, 2008 12:00 am

Guest host Dave Price's last day

Charlie Esser
Newark, NJ
Stay-at-home dad

Dave has had a great time this week giving away someone else's money. Dave says that the studio audience is rooting for Charlie to get the Capitol One check for $50K, $100K, $250K, and if all goes well Charlie will walk away with the $1M.

Charlie has his STQ available.

$50K - On the sitcom "30 Rock," the characters work at a network owned by what unlikely parent company?

A - Sheinhardt Pajama Co.
B - Sheinhardt Wig Co.
C - Sheinhardt Plastic Utensil Co.
D - Sheinhardt Mustard Co.

Charlie sighs. He watches the show all the time and remembers the joke; it's not mentioned very often. The one he was expecting to see (another company mentioned on the show) isn't here. He has a strong feeling toward one of them, but it would be a guess. He decides to risk it. Charlie says this justifies his being a stay-at-home dad and watching TV all day. With the money he's going to pay off some bills, possibly buy a new car and it will certainly help with the move to Chicago.

$100K - "The Melody Haunts My Reverie" is a famous Roy Lichtenstein work that depicts a woman singing a lyric from what iconic song?

A - Stardust
B - Night and Day
C - Misty
D - Body and Soul

Charlie knows Roy Lichtenstein's work - he's a big fan - he doesn't even have an inkling so he wants to switch the question. Dave asks if Charlie wants to take a guess. He would have picked D.

$100K (STQ) - What is the international radio signal for an emergency that is not quite as severe as a "Mayday"?

A - Tre-tre
B - Rel-rel
C - Ton-ton
D - Pan-pan

Charlie sighs again. He has no idea and doesn't hesitate to walk away.

ANSWERS:
$50K - B (Sheinhardt Wig Co.)
$100K - A (Stardust)
$100K (STQ) - D (Pan-pan)

This plug for Capital One went on far too long. I think Dave was padding the tape a bit, so they could fill out the episode without a carryover.

D - Pan-pan
To be picky, the signal is simply "Pan." Someone using the call would typically repeat it for emphasis, "Pan-Pan-Pan," but it would remain valid if used singly.

agrees w/Marley on $100kQ - after 9 years as an air traffic controller, never heard nor were we taught to refer to it as "pan-pan" - this must another wiki definition

btw, Mayday comes from the French (M'Aidez)

Are you still an ATC, 7yrs? Do you work at a major airport or control center? That can be an awfully stressful job, with no small consequences for making a mistake!

YAY!

$100K: NAFC®. Switch it.

$100K #2: NAFC®on this one either. Ask the audience and see if they have a clue. 50:50 after that. Likely, I'll be walking away.

Stay-at-home dad
Charlie could easily be one of us; he did well.

I had no idea, but I have all my lifelines, so I'll use ATA.

Again, no idea, so time to STQ or PAF. Let's say I used STQ like Charlie did.

Bad choice, so it's time to PAF.

He could. He and I used to be friends- he's a really smart guy.

(edited to add info since this sounded kind of abrupt- I fell out of touch with him when I was going through a really bad time a couple of years ago, so I was completely stunned to see this transcript up here. Definitely a blast from the past. I don't have current contact info for him anymore, but if I can find an email addy for him, I'll definitely relay the invite.)

The original 100K question....I knew, because everybody in my hometown of Bloomington, IN should know it. It's Stardust by the late, great Hoagy Carmichael.

Welcome to the Bored, EricVG16.

As we always say, every question is easy if you know it!

So was Hoagy Carmichael a native of Bloomington?

Hoagy Carmichael was a Kappa Sigma at Indiana.

Female supporters of the fraternity are called "Stardusters".

Yes, he was, and Indiana University has the official collection of his papers, etc.

Just send him a pm and be done with it. You probably scared him away with your avatar.

If you had any substance, I'd take this bat and do a Barry Bonds on your ectoplasmaticbutt.
