Where do you get that he received the maximum sentence? The article you provided disagrees (twice):
South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to prison for five years Tuesday for the 2013 killing of his girlfriend, less than half the time he could have received following his manslaughter conviction last month.
Pistorius could have received up to 15 years in prison for shooting model Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013 in his home.
The story's been updated since it was initially posted during the middle of the night (it now shows a timeline of 12:18 pm). When I cited to it, the article said he had been sentenced to "a maximum five years" and didn't mention that he could have received up to 15. From the way the article was written I interpreted that as meaning that five years was the maximum he could have received (what it actually means is that he could serve part of the sentence under house arrest instead of in the slammer). Since it's been revised, that might indicate that others had the same interpretation of the article as I did.

I saw a video of the judge saying she was giving him the maximum sentence on the morning news. Perhaps she was wrong?

The prosecutors in the Pistorius case plan to challenge the verdict and the sentence. I guess the laws regarding double jeopardy aren't the same in South Africa as they are here.

Report: Oscar Pistorius to be released from prison, placed on house arrest
Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison and put on house arrest in August after serving only one-sixth of his five-year sentence for the killing of his girlfriend, reports the BBC.

Prison officials made the recommendation on the basis of Pistorius' good behavior in jail. Pistorius was eligible for release under South African law after serving a portion of his sentence.

Pistorius, 28, has been jailed since October, when he was found guilty of culpable homicide but not guilty of murder in the Feb. 14, 2013, shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

He was released a day early and at night to try to avoid the TV camera circus. Seems to have worked.

Unfortunately, the same "flawed" judge is to impose his new sentence. At least she probably got a new payment out of it.

Oscar Pistorius denied parole over killing of Reeva Steenkamp

Former Olympic and Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius was denied parole Friday and will have to stay in prison at least another 16 months after it was decided that he had not served the "minimum detention period" required to be released after his murder conviction for the 2013 killing of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The parole board hearing Pistorius' application ruled that he would be able to apply again in August 2024, South Africa's Department of Corrections said in a statement. The board cited a clarification on Pistorius' sentence that was issued by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal three days ago, according to the statement.

On Feb. 14, 2013, Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp, a model and law student, in his bathroom. He had told the court he believed Steenkamp was an intruder when he shot her several times.

South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius granted parole, will be released from prison on Jan. 5

Double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius was granted parole Friday, 10 years after shooting his girlfriend through a toilet door at his home in South Africa in a killing that jolted the world. He will be released from prison on Jan. 5, but will be constantly monitored by parole officials for five years until his sentence expires, the Department of Corrections said.

Pistorius' parole will come with other conditions, Department of Corrections spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said outside of the prison where Pistorius has been incarcerated in the South African capital, Pretoria.
