The 2013 Boney Awards-Top 80 Songs
Posted: Mon May 12, 2014 8:34 am
And now, the tunes that had the biggest impact on my ears and brain last year.
As I alluded to in an earlier post, it's a pretty weird list. Some entries may
have you wondering if this is really me posting..to be honest, I'm not entirely sure myself.
At any rate, a couple more trivial tidbits before we get started...there are NINE remakes
on the list...I don't have the actual figures to back it up, but I'm pretty sure that is,
by far, a Boneys record. And finally, there are 2 songs by an ex-Beatle...and 2 songs
by the OFFSPRING of ex-Beatles! Hmmmm...who could THEY be?? Read on, and find out...
This year, for my Top songs of the year, I'm only going with 80. By the time I got
to around the mid 80's, I found there were just not enough tunes standing up to the
rigid Boney standards...fine songs, mind you, and placed on my iPod, just not Boney material.
And so we start with #80:
80) (You Will) Set The World On Fire-David Bowie
From Bowie's 1st album in almost forever comes this rocker. Welcome back, Ziggy Stardust.

79) Your Gravity-Adam Daniel
If you followed my Boneys play-by-play over the years, you'll recall that I'm a sucker for
swoony falsetto-laden choruses outta the 60's playbook. Here's a midtempo number with that formula.

78) In Your Blue Eyes-Justin Hayward
The most recognizable voice of the Moody Blues does a solo turn here with this sunny tune.

77) Ever Loved Once-Blitzen Trapper
Music to tie-dye your shirt by.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax6PdHEg5fA
76) Sing Loud-Alpha Rev
As you'd expect of a song with this title, it has an anthemic, coming down from the
mountain vibe.

75) Young At Heart-David LaBrel
A power-poppin' goodie that'll make you feel 16 again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfZZUwZjWLw
74) Another is Waiting-The Avett Brothers
Another fine offering from these expert practioners of Americana music.

73) Wisteria-James McCartney
The youngest of Paul & Linda's offspring rocks out here. Most of the standout tracks on
his "Me" album are the softer ones..this being the exception. He may not have the outstanding
voice of his dad, but he does know how to write a melody.
On the link below, please note that the tracks are listed in a box in the middle, to the
right of the picture of the album cover. sCROLL DOWN to Wisteria and press play arrow.

72) Didn't Mean To Fall In Love-Boston
One of the last couple of tracks that vocalist Brad Delp recorded before his death.
Yes, he died in 2007, but Boston takes forever between albums. This one trades on the riff
from "More Than a Feeling, although it is a quieter song.

71) Third Man-The Duckworth Lewis Method
Side project from Pugwash (an obscure Irish band but a T-Bone fave) frontman Thomas Walsh.
Very ELO-ish.

70) Away We Go-Prince of Spain
Don't know much about this act. Got the song as part of a free label sampler.
Nice modern pop song with a hummable melody.

69) Don't Grow Up Too Soon-Candle Thieves
Sweet song written from the perspective of a soon-to-be-dad.
Unfortunately I could only find a partial cut of the tune:

here's a live acoustic version:

68) I Had Me A Girl-The Civil Wars
Wow. A raw, open wound of a song. Seriously, this one slaps you upside the head.
Powerful stuff.

67) Amelita-Court Yard Hounds
Two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks. The sisters step out without their lead singer,
and dang, do they sound good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg4nbT_v7Xg
66) Rebel Beat-Goo Goo Dolls
Pop-Rock call to arms from these Buffalo boys.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUi8gQPsMdw
65) Bonfire Heart-James Blunt
When taken in small doses, he can be quite enjoyable. This melody sticks with you.

64) The One You Should've Let Go-The Lone Bellow
Lively Americana bopper.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxa_TqXgWHA
63) Annie's Song-Brett Dennen & Milow
With apologies to John Denver fans, I find the original to be insufferable.
In this remake, found on an interesting tribute album called "The Music Is You" (which
also features a power pop version of "Looking For Space" by Lemonheads frontman Evan
Dando!) a simpler, soft but peppy arrangement brings out a sweet innocence in the lyrics
that captures that optimistic "I'll love you forever" spirit of the early stages of
a love affair.

62) All Better-Mayer Hawthorne
First of 3 tunes from a very good album. This one is a change-of-pace ballad
that strays from the jazz/R & B sound of most of the album. Hell, he sorta sounds like
Harry Connick Jr. in spots here!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dRcJVxfAT8
61) Boomerang-Barenaked Ladies
BNL also places 3 songs on my list. Here's the first. Pleasantly poppy.
