#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Mon Jun 02, 2014 5:02 am

It's time to start the final week of the intermediate questions. Next week, the questions will get harder than Chinese algebra. Oh, crap... I gave away one of those Level 3 categories. Now I'll have to write a new question. :P

Answers are due by Tuesday 6/3 at 4 PM EDT.

1. THE MANGO / THE PIE / THE CALZONE / THE BIG SALAD
2. SILVIA ARNOUIL / GISELLA ROJAS / JUAN PABLO CAMACHO / EMILIO PALMA
3. STOKE CITY #7 / GOLDEN STATE #7 / WE DON'T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF / JANET'S BROTHER AND EX

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. THE MANGO / THE PIE / THE CALZONE / THE BIG SALAD

Names of "Seinfeld" episodes.

2. SILVIA ARNOUIL / GISELLA ROJAS / JUAN PABLO CAMACHO / EMILIO PALMA

People who were born in the Antarctic. Three of these people were born on mainland Antarctica. I think that one of them was actually born on an island south of the Antarctic Circle. I didn't include Solveig Jacobsen in this list because, although the island on which she was born is technically an Antarctic island, that island is actually located a couple of degrees north of the Antarctic Circle.

3. STOKE CITY #7 / GOLDEN STATE #7 / WE DON'T HAVE TO TAKE OUR CLOTHES OFF / JANET'S BROTHER AND EX

People named Jermaine. Those are British soccer player Jermaine Pennant, NBA player Jermaine O'Neal, singer Jermaine Stewart, and singers Jermaine Jackson and Jermaine Dupri.

4. PANTHER / TIGER / LION / MAVERICKS

Macintosh operating systems.

5. 57738491375 / 5993 / 58008 / 0.7734

Numbers that look like words when typed out on a traditional calculator and turned upside down. Those numbers spell out sleighbells, eggs, boobs, and hello. The practice of calculator spelling is also known as "beghilosz", after the letters that can be made from upside down calculator numbers.

6. CORRUPT CORPSES / ICE CREAM SERVING / MONTANA CAPITAL / PLURALIZED GERE-WINGER FILM?

"Vile Bodies", "Scoop", "Helena", and "Officers and Gentlemen". What are they?

Evelyn Waugh novels.

7. CUYAHOGA RIVER / LAKE TAHOE / LA BREA TAR PITS / SAHARA DESERT

Redundant place names. Cuyahoga means "crooked river" in the local Native American language, Tahoe means "lake" in the local Native American language, Brea means "tar" in Spanish, and Sahara means "desert" in Arabic.

8. CHINESE WEI / RUSSIAN I / OMEGA / MISSING PUZZLE PIECES

I'll bet that you've seen this hundreds of times and never thought about it.

Parts of the Wikipedia logo.

9. BATIBOT / ZHIMA JIE / GALLI GALLI SIM SIM / ULICA SEZAMKOWA

Foreign versions of "Sesame Street". These are from the Philippines, China, India, and Poland.

10. COMPENSATED / GRIDIRON / TORSION / FOUCAULT

Pendulums.
