Lyrically Speaking: See if you can solve it

#1 Post by astrnomr » Mon Apr 21, 2008 7:22 am

This is another straightforward quiz with a mystery theme to bind them all together. There's a little of everything in this one.

1. Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now
I am not dreaming

2. When you hear the music, you make a dip
Into someone else's pocket, then make a slip
Steal a car and go to Las Vegas, oh, the gigolo pool

3. Listen to the tide slowly turning
Wash all our heartaches away
We're part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day

4. And she'll tease you
She'll unease you
All the better just to please you

5. Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies
Give me no reasons, give me alibis
Tell me you love me and don't let me cry
Say anything but don't say goodbye

6. Try to remember the magic that we shared
In time your broken heart will mend
I never used you, you knew I really cared
I hate to see it have to end
But it's over

7. Every night the dreams return to haunt me
Your rosary wrapped around your throat
I lie awake and sweat, afraid to fall asleep
I see your face looking back at me

8. But I can see that black horizon glooming
Ever close to view
It's over now, it's not my fault
See how this feels for you

9. Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess ev'ry form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is
Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice

10. All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

Bonus: Identify today's theme.

Double Bonus: What famous band member was missing from song #1, and which famous band did the artist of song #10 leave? (10 points each)

Final Bonus: What is so unusual about the title of song #1?

Dammit, fanny used this exact set of lyrics towards the end of her run, and I still can't remember what it is... even with the theme!

6. Try to remember the magic that we shared
In time your broken heart will mend
I never used you, you knew I really cared
I hate to see it have to end
But it's over
Sad Eyes - Robert John

7. Every night the dreams return to haunt me

10. All my instincts, they return

Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

Bonus: Identify today's theme. - The Eyes have it.... I used "eyes" for one of my Tuesday Wordplay LS games back in January, and it helped me get a couple of these since I had used them just recently....

Having eyes and a colon is unusual, so is the pun on "Sweet", but I'll go with the fact that none of the words in the title appear in the lyrics.

The eyes have it...

Double Bonus: What famous band member was missing from song #1, and which famous band did the artist of song #10 leave? (10 points each)

I'm hoping I'm right about Neil Young not being included in "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes". And Peter Gabriel left Genesis just before they turned into a mediocre band with flashes of genius, instead of a genius band with flashes of mediocrity.

Final Bonus: What is so unusual about the title of song #1?

There are several things that are unusual about it. It contains a colon, which isn't typical for a pop song. It's a play on words, a homophone for "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes". It refers to another singer, not in the band (Judy Collins). And finally, the title is never sung in the song.
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel

Bonus: Identify today's theme.

Eye think eye can get this one! Eyes in the title.

Double Bonus: What famous band member was missing from song #1, and which famous band did the artist of song #10 leave?

#1 is minus Neil Young, and # 10 jettisoned Genesis.(10 points each)

Final Bonus: What is so unusual about the title of song #1?

There is nothing unusual in the fact I don't know it, as previous LS Meisters can attest!

Bonus: Identify today's theme.
Songs with "Eyes" in the title.

Double Bonus: What famous band member was missing from song #1, and which famous band did the artist of song #10 leave? (10 points each)
Neil Young wasn't part of CSN (eventually CSNY) at that time, and Peter Gabriel left Genesis.

Final Bonus: What is so unusual about the title of song #1?
None of the words in the title appear in the song. While some of the other answers were technically correct, they weren't all that unusual.
