All the matches and partials on this are correct. One definite answer is wrong - the lead character did not appear in any other movies - and the one with a question mark is also wrong.

FRANK SAYS:

"All the matches and partials on this are correct. One definite answer is wrong - the lead character did not appear in any other movies - and the one with a question mark is also wrong."

24. “So, you're a werewolf?”
“Yeah, last time I checked.”

This isn't American Werewolf in London. It's TWILIGHT: NEW MOON.

Which gives us Robert Z Leonard, who directed New Moon and In the Good Old Summertime.

BUT, it doesn't seem to fit Frank's correction. So, there may be another.

Boxing movie...

Not Gentleman Jim.
Not Hurricane (Carter's death doesn't work)

Raging Bull? LaMotta inducted AFTER Raging Bull.

Turns out Jim Braddock wasn't inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame until 2001.

CINDERELLA MAN!!

Directed by Ron Howard = 137. (THE GOLD) RUSH

Duh!

Fritz Lang - 6. (MAD MAX:) FURY and 135. RANCHO NOTORIOUS

And double DUH.

One we realized that the Oceana Roll went with the Gold Rush. I went crazy looking for another Chaplin picture and was disappointed I couldn't find one.

We aren't looking for BILLY the Kid. Just THE KID.

Charlie Chaplin - 137. THE GOLD RUSH and 17. (PAT GARRETT AND BILLY) THE KID

David O Russell - 10. JOY (LUCK CLUB) and 82. AMERICAN HUSTLE

Jean Renior - 8. (THE BRIDGE OVER) THE RIVER and 47. BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING*
Didn't Renior also direct Rules of the Game? Unlike Frank to use dupes.

This is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4: ON STRANGER TIDES, based on a novel, On Stranger Tides. This yields Pirates and Roman Polanski (Chinatown). And the reason Frank picked this one rather than one of the other Pirates of the Caribbean movies is because it was directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago).

The fact that Frank insisted we put the correct title of The Bridge ON the River Kwai leads me to believe that word will be used for whatever match is appropriate. Or maybe he wants the 1984 Mark Rydell movie instead of the Renoir one.

I thought I'd fixed Kwai.

No. It turns out that we only HAVE two Renoir movies. We've got The River and Rules of the Game.

Earlier, Frank said that one of the definites was wrong because the lead character did not appear in any other movies.. I found the Twilight movie but thought it might be the wrong definite because it didn't fit Frank's hint.

47. A collapsible kayak is just one of the props that bedevils the pipe-smoking hero of this comedy, who went on to bumble his way through four more films.

So, it's NOT BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING.

I'm not the one who insisted on correcting the title. Renoir is right. But there aren't two Renoir movies in the game. One of them is wrong.

Sorry to mislead you. I must have miscounted the incorrect definites. You're right about Boudu being wrong.

I just realized that The Mayles Brothers, who did 95. GREY GARDENS, must have done 19. (DEATH OF A) SALESMAN, about the Bible salesmen.

They did Gimme Shelter and some others, too.

At the time Salesman came out, my uncle (TLAF's brother-in-law and husband of my godmother) was wrapping up selling books and moving into calendars for businesses with my aunt - which they did for many years (my aunt did it well into her late 70s and, for a couple of clients, until she was 81).

Along with the Great Books of the Western World, we got a Bible.

I should have come up with this one a long time ago; it's right up my alley.

George Romero of Dawn of the Dead and other zombie movie fame also directed a film called Martin, so there's the link to The Return of Martin Guerre.

Darren Arnofsky (Black Swan) also directed a movie called Pi, so there's the link to The Life of Pi.

Filling out a couple of the partials:

Ivan Reitman = 14. KINDERGARTEN COP and 123. (STARS AND) STRIPES (FOREVER)

I struggled with this one for a while because I thought that Harold Ramis directed "Stripes".

Edward Zwick = 74. LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS and 38. (PATHS OF) GLORY

Henry Koster = 63. (THE) HARVEY (GIRLS)

Interestingly, Koster directed the second version of "My Man Godfrey", but Frank already indicated that "My Man Godfrey" has been correctly paired with Gregory La Cava.

Henry Koster directed Stars and Stripes Forever, so that completes him.

I thought Harold Ramis directed Stripes, too!

9. Many of the scenes in this movie were filmed through a mirror, since the actor playing the lead role couldn’t quite manage to live up to the title of the movie.

This is MY LEFT FOOT. It was the first thing I thought of, but didn't check it out until just now.

Oh, nice! That was directed by Jim Sheridan, who also did 84. (LOST) IN AMERICA.

Lee Tamahori = 102. DIE ANOTHER DAY and 32. (POSTCARDS FROM) THE EDGE

The Michael Ritchie match:

49. (A CERTAIN) SMILE and 127. COPS AND ROBBERSONS

47. A collapsible kayak is just one of the props that bedevils the pipe-smoking hero of this comedy, who went on to bumble his way through four more films.

MR HULOT'S HOLIDAY

and gives us

George Cukor - 134. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and 47. (MR HULOT'S) HOLIDAY

As far as I can tell, we have two unsolved clues. We know the Swedish movie is Sjostrom, so I am not counting that for the moment.

7. This movie about drug addiction was based on a Broadway hit by a playwright who, seventeen years later, would earn an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

89. With the release of this film, its creator became the first American animator since Disney to have two financial successes in a row.

Someone mentioned Frank Borzage earlier.

Frank Borzage - 61. STAGE DOOR CANTEEN and 118. SECRETS (AND LIES)

Secrets = Mary Pickford's last movie.
