NFL Shortens Overtime

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Tue May 23, 2017 1:00 pm

Beginning this season, overtime in regular and preseason NFL games will be a maximum of ten minutes. Both teams will still get one possession unless the first team scores a touchdown. Post-season overtime rules, including 15-minute quarters, will remain unchanged. The main reason is to reduce injuries and concern about teams possibly playing five full quarters of football on a Sunday before having to play again on Thursday. However, one side effect is that more ties (there were two last season) may occur, which may mean fewer tiebreakers will be needed to determine playoff teams and seeding.

Other rule changes:

--Teams can have two players return from injured reserve during the season instead on one.
--The cutdown after the third preseason game from 90 to 75 players has been eliminated.
--The NFL will no longer penalize most post-touchdown celebrations; exceptions for taunting opponents, vulgar or overly long celebrations, and weapons imitations
--The rule on ejecting a player for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the same game is permanent.
--The rule on bringing touchbacks after kickoffs to the 25-yard-line is permanent.
--Leaping over players to block a field goal or extra point is prohibited.
--Receivers running patterns will get protection as defenseless players even if they aren't thrown the ball
--Crackback blocks by players in motion are illegal no matter where they occur
--No more replay booth; instead the NFL office conducts the review similar to MLB (the on-field official has a tablet).
--The ten-second runoff rule for teams committing penalties in the last minute is extended to the last two minutes.
--Teams that commit multiple penalties in the last two minutes to burn off clock will get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and have the clock restored to the previous play's time.
