Tommy Arthur, the "Houdini of Death Row," was executed in Alabama last night. This is for a 1982 killing-for hire (after he had already been in and out of prison for murder previously), three sets of trials for the same crime (all of which convicted him; the first two were vacated on technicalities), and seven or eight stays of execution over the years.
There was a temporary stay at the US Supreme Court, but that was overturned by the full court, allowing Alabama to start the execution at 11:50 pm CT.
