Maybe the Bored needs it own Logo

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Thu Apr 24, 2008 11:08 am

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh ... ogc124.xml

From our friends in the UK
The logo, for the Office of Government Commerce, was intended to signify a bold commitment to the body’s aim of “improving value for money by driving up standards and capability in procurement”.

Instead, it has generated howls of mirth and what is likely to be a barrage of teasing emails from mandarins in other departments.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Interesting use of "mandarin" as slang for a bureaucrat in general rather than high public officials of the former Chinese empire. Had not heard that before.

Or as the rotated logo indicates, "Up yours."

I thought that we were going to use a graphic of raspberries for our logo.

If I could change the logo, I'd have put up uly's Bill the Cat avatar as the Bored logo, but I think that can only be done on Dave's end (Where the hell has that boy been anyway.... :P )

This gets better!

A quote from the Telegraph article:

A spokesman for OGC said: “It is true that it caused a few titters among some staff when viewed on its side, but on consideration we concluded that the effect was generic to the particular combination of the letters OGC - and it is not inappropriate to an organisation that’s looking to have a firm grip on Government spend.” (Emphasis added)
I am about 25% sure of this.

I don't remember if it was this Bored or another blog where I saw these unfortunate company logos.

Enjoy.

Look at the sideways version in the Spoiler. Now imagine the O is a head, and the C are two legs. Use your imagination with the G....

Well, the whole world must be hanging around wb then, since this showed up in England and has been making the rounds for a day or so! It was on the FailBlog yesterday (which unfortunately keeps freezing my work computer, so I won't try to link to it again!)

Yes, the sticking up thingie is a "thingie" sticking up -- and the connected part is an arm/hand with a firm grip on the situation. Check out Ed's animated version if you haven't yet.

Speaking of the FailBlog, did everyone see the "Jesus Loves The Little Children" light switch?

The scary thing is, I think we may have had that thing when I was a kid! I know we had a couple of Guardian Angel light switches (which aren't nearly as disturbing!)

I'm a little confused by the logo that started this thread. Did the agency turn the letters to the vertical on purpose or is it that some people turned the logo on its side and then noticed what it looked like?

Seems very strange to me that the agency would have meant for the logo to be viewed in that orientation with the letters on their sides.

OK, now that I read the linked article I see that this was an unintended perspective. I guess putting it on pens and similar objects would create that perspective.
No matter where you go, there you are.

It's a term that's widely used in the UK press when referring to ministries or other arms of the UK government. However, its meaning is closer to "those who run bureaucracies" rather than bureaucrats in general.

Hilarious logo. We're the OGC - standing firmly for change.

There is this statue of Lincoln on the way to Vermont (the way I go) that looks like kids are giving him a Monica.

Oh good, there is a difference ya know!

Hey, I admit I'm a bureaucrat. But I sure as hell don't run the bureaucracy!
