Echo of 1972

#1 Post by jarnon » Wed Jun 07, 2017 6:20 am

Washington Post wrote:The nation’s top intelligence official told associates in March that President Trump asked him if he could intervene with then-FBI Director James Comey to get the bureau to back off its focus on former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its Russia probe, according to officials.
Those of us of a certain age have heard this story before:
Haldeman: That the way to handle this now is for us to have [Deputy Director for Central Intelligence Vernon] Walters call [Acting FBI Director] Pat Gray and just say, “Stay the hell out of this…this is ah, business here we don’t want you to go any further on it.” That’s not an unusual development,…
Nixon agreed, but Walters had no part of it. This is The Smoking Gun Tape that Nixon fought like hell to keep secret, and that led to his resignation.

I don't know if the Post story is true. President Trump lived through Watergate too and knows better than to do exactly what Nixon did. He certainly wouldn't tape the conversation. But the similarity is eerie.

By now, you should know better. It's a big mistake to assume that Donald Trump is too smart to do any particular thing, no matter how dumb it may be.
