RIP Adam West

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Sat Jun 10, 2017 10:45 am

Adam West, whose straight-faced portrayal of Batman in a 1960s TV series lifted the tight-clad Caped Crusader into the national consciousness, has died at age 88, his family said Saturday on a verified Facebook page.

West died Friday night after "a short but brave battle with leukemia," the family statement said.

If you're only going to have one role, he picked the right one. From what I hear, he was a genuinely nice guy and really put a lot of himself into his appearances at all those conventions he went to. And he's on a show that's going to be around forever. RIP

Indeed. Another one of my childhood icons is gone.

Awww...and this right as Batman asks Catwoman to tie the knot:

How I loved that show...could never understand at the time how my dad would always be laughing while the Dynamic Duo were in such dire danger due to the nafarious machinations of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, etc.

Years later, I understand. The reruns play on MeTV and a couple other channels. I watch 'em now and then. II still enjoy them, but now I enjoy them with amusement.

A dark day in Gotham City indeed.

I spent many hours watching him. To me, he will always be the real Batman.

I don't know how much credence to place in this, but it came from an article in the New York Post. According to this, Adam West really was a Batman, so to speak:

He was in an early 90's pilot of a show written by Conan O'Brian and Robert Smigel called Lookwell.

I have seen it described as a self-mocking, self-aware performance that shows that he would have been fun to have a drink with.

It is really good, but I don't know where they could have taken it as a series.

I have never seen Batman (with West), but I did watch Lookwell-so I am probably one of the few people who have seen more episodes of Lookwell than I have seen of Batman.

Oddly enough, given my "Spock" nickname, which came after high school-some of my HS football teammates called me Batman and hummed the theme (or whatever it was).

Also, oddly enough, I think both nicknames were related to my uni-brow.
