Game #169: A Musical Salute to the Piltdown Man

Identify each of the 125 songs below. Match them into pairs, then match each pair with two other songs, for a total of 45 foursomes.

• 71 songs will be used once.
• 50 songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.
• 3 songs will be used twice in the same capacity in the same foursome.
• 1 song will be used twice in the same capacity in the same foursome, plus one additional time in a different capacity in a different foursome.

A word on artists: I generally go with the original artist. But I might make an exception if someone else arguably had the definitive or most popular version of the song. Sometimes, it may not matter.

1. I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day.
Only trouble is, gee whiz,
I'm dreamin' my life away.

2. When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band.
He said, "Son, when you grow up,
Would you be the savior of the broken,
The beaten and the damned?"

3. Some boys try and some boys lie,
But I don't let them play (no way).
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day.

4. I've been searching for the daughter of the devil himself,
I've been searching for an angel in white,
I've been waiting for a woman who's a little of both
And I can feel her, but she's nowhere in sight.

5. If you should ever leave me,
Though life would still go on, believe me,
The world could show nothing to me,
So what good would livin' do me?

6. Not more than three short years ago,
I was abandoned and alone
Without a penny to my name,
So very young and so afraid,
No proper shoes upon my feet,
Sometimes I couldn't even eat.

7. What you gonna do when the well runs dry?
You gonna run away and hide.
I'm gonna run right by your side.
For you, pretty baby, I'll even die.

8. Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man.

9. Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie,
If you put me to the test, if you let me try.

10. A man may be hot,
But he’s not
When he’s shot.

11. It's obvious you hate me
Though I've done nothing wrong.
I never even met you
So what could I have done?

12. I don't care what's right or wrong,
I don't try to understand.
Let the devil take tomorrow.
Lord, tonight I need a friend.

13. She makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up,
Just one touch and I erupt
Like a volcano and cover her with my love.

14. A broom is drearily sweeping up the broken pieces of yesterday’s life.
Somewhere a queen is weeping,
Somewhere a king has no wife.

15. I feel like I've been locked up tight
For a century of lonely nights
Waiting for someone to release me.
You're lickin' your lips
And blowing kisses my way,
But that don't mean I'm gonna give it away.

16. Well, she ain't the kind
Makes heads turn at the drop of her name,
But something inside
That she's got turns you on just the same,
And she loves me,
God knows, she loves me.

17. I guess it was yourself you were involved with,
I would've sworn it was me.
I might've found out sooner
If you'd only let me close enough to see.

18. I like to dream
Right between my sound machine,
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night.
Any place it goes is right.

19. Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have kicked you around some.
Tell me why you want to lay there, revel in your abandon.

20. See the man with the lonely eyes.
Oh, take his hand, you'll be surprised.

21. Caught you in the morning with another one in my bed.
Don't you care about me anymore?
Don't you care about me?
I don't think so.
Six foot tall,
Came without a warning, so I had to shoot him dead.
He won't come around here anymore.
Come around here?
I don't think so.

22. I thought that the major was a little lady suffragette.

You need more than that one line? I don’t think so.

23. Oh, you're so condescending,
Your gall is never ending,
We don't want nothin', not a thing from you.
Your life is trite and jaded,
Boring and confiscated,
If that's your best, your best won't do.

24. The sun ain't nearly on the rise
And we still got the moon and stars above.
Underneath the velvet skies
Love is all that matters.
Won't you stay with me?
And don't you ever leave.

25. All the years of useless search have finally reached an end.
Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend.

26. I'm going red and my tongue's getting tied (tongue’s getting tied),
I'm off my head and my mouth's getting dry,
I'm high, but I try, try, try (oh my).

27. So take the photographs and still-frames in your mind,
Hang them on a shelf in good health and good time,
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial,
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.

28. Well, let her be somebody else's queen,
I don't want to know about it.
There's too many others that know what I mean
And that's why I got to live without it.

29. Don't you ever feel sad,
Lean on me when times are bad,
When the day comes and you're down
In a river of trouble and about to drown.

30. Every day
Love me your own special way
Melt all my heart away
With a smile.

31. Some boys got the look of a Greek Adonis,
Some boys try to talk you off your feet,
Some boys think they're God’s gift to woman,
Some boys think they're sweet enough to eat.

32. I was a car hop,
You were into bebop.

33. Seen a lot of things in this old world,
When I touched them, they did nothing, girl.

34. I'm gonna get myself 'cross the river,
That's the price I'm willing to pay.
I'm gonna make you stand and deliver
And give me love in the old-fashioned way.

35. I caught the moon today
Pick it up
And throw it away, all right.
I got the perfect steal,
A cleaner love
With a dirty feel, all right.

36. You like to drive like Mario Andretti
I like it taking my time,
But let me say wherever you are going,
You know it suits me just fine.

37. The letters and calls got you climbing the walls,
And everyone wants a favor.
They beg to remind you of times left behind you,
But you know the past is a loser.

38. I ain't tellin' tales, anybody else
Could repeat the things that I've heard.
She's been talkin' sweet and it's on the street
How our girlfriend's spreadin' the word.

39. The room was completely black,
I hugged her and she hugged back.
Like the sailor said, quote,
"Ain't that a hole in the boat?"

40. We can make it right,
Hit the city lights,
Then tonight ease the lovin' pain.
Let me take you to the max.

41. We've known each other for so long,
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it.
Inside we both know what's been going on,
We know the game and we're gonna play it.

Yes, I went there. Deal with it.

42. Laughing like children, living like lovers,
Rolling like thunder under the covers.

43. Thrills I get when you hold me close.
Oh, my darling, you're the most.

44. Sadness is beautiful, loneliness that's tragical,
So help me, I can't win this war, oh no.
Touch me now, don't bother if every second it makes me weaker,
You can save me from the man I've become.

45. This girl tasted love
As tender as the gentle dawn
She cried a single tear
A teardrop that was sweet and warm.
Our hearts told us we were right,
And on that sweet and velvet night
A child had died,
A woman had been born.

Nope, nothing creepy about that!

46. Every night your tears come down
And I know how you're feelin' inside.
Loneliness is no one's friend,
I've been takin' the same kind of ride.

47. I'm really gonna miss you picking fights
And me falling for it, screaming that I'm right,
And you would hide away and find your peace of mind
With some indie record that's much cooler than mine.

48. Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders.
Through the clouds I see love shine,
It keeps me warm as life grows colder.

49. I can't explain it, how you made me open up
And you showed me things I never thought I'd do.
I'd hate to think of ever losing you,
Cause there is no one that makes me feel the way you do.

50. Call me a joker, call me a fool,
Right at this moment I'm totally cool,
Clear as a crystal, sharp as a knife,
I feel like I'm in the prime of my life.

51. We passed upon the stair,
We spoke of was and when.
Although I wasn’t there
He said I was his friend.

52. Have some fun,
Have some fun,
Have some fun,
Burn it up,
Let's burn up the night, baby.

53. Well, they said you was high-classed,
Well, that was just a lie.
Yeah they said you was high-classed,
Well, that was just a lie.

54. Red cups and sweaty bodies everywhere,
Hands in the air like we don't care,
'Cause we came to have so much fun now,
Got somebody here, might get some now.

And in case you were wondering how that party ended….

55. F**k that, someone help Denaun,
He’s upstairs wrestling with Elton John.
Hey Von, you see me stepping on these leprechauns?
It gotta be Tums, the Ex-lax is gone.

56. You'd say I'm putting you on,
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm.
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain,
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane.

57. It's not the perfume that you wear,
It's not the ribbons in your hair.

58. Early morning Manhattan,
Ocean winds blow on the land.
The Movie-Palace is now undone,
The all-night watchmen have had their fun.

59. But something went wrong.
We loved each other,
We just couldn't get along.
Take a good look at me,
I'm in misery, can't you see?

60. She loved me so long and she loved me so hard,
I finally passed out in her front yard.

61. Big man, you got money in your hand,
So what?
You're at a table for two, but still there's only you,
Big shot!

62. They say there's seven wonders in the world,
But what they say is out of date.
There's more than seven wonders in the world.
I just met number eight.

63. She keeps Moët et Chandon
In her pretty cabinet.
'Let them eat cake,' she says,
Just like Marie Antoinette.

64. See, my days are cold without you
But I'm hurtin' while I'm with you,
And though my heart can't take no more
I keep on running back to you.

65. All your love is gone
So sing a lonely song
Of a deep blue dream,
Seven horses seem to be on the mark.

66. I won't ask for promises,
So you won't have to lie.
We've both played this game before,
Say I love you, then say goodbye.

67. The hurting’s on me, yeah,
And I will never be free, no, my baby, no no.
You gave a promise to me, yeah,
And you broke it, you broke it.

68. Take back your Conga, ay, your Samba, ay, your Rumba, ayyiyi.
Why can't you send us, ay, a less strenu, ay, ous number, ayyiyi?
I got more bumps now, ay, than on a, ay, cucumber, ayyiyi.

69. I need to tell you this,
There's no other love like your love
And I, as long as I live,
I'll give you all the joy
My heart and soul can give.

70. Moses went walking with the staff of wood yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Newton got beaned by the apple good yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

71. You're struttin' into town like you're slingin' a gun,
Just a small town dude with a big city attitude.
Honey, are you lookin' for some trouble tonight?
Well alright!

72. We've been together since way back when.
Sometimes I never want to see you again.

73. You must have heard it from my best friend,
She's always talkin' when she should be listenin',
Can't keep a secret to save her life,
But still I trusted her with all I felt inside.

74. Like the fool I am and I'll always be,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.
They can change their minds, but they can't change me,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.

75. The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key,
So they rode on his head in their furry donkey.

76. Well, the beat don't stop,
We talk so tough,
And there's a perfect kiss somewhere out in the dark,
But a kiss ain’t enough.

77. I really wasn't carin', but I felt my eyes starin'
At a guy who stuck out in the crowd.
He had the kind of body that would shame Adonis
And a face that would make any man proud,

78. Close the door, leave the cold outside,
I don't need nothing when I'm by your side.
We got something that'll never die,
Our dreams, our pride.

79. As far as I can see, this is heaven,
And speaking just for me, it's ours to share.

80. High blood drumming on your skin, it's so tight.
You feel my heat, I'm just a moment behind.

81. I always needed time on my own,
I never thought I'd need you there when I cry,
And the days feel like years when I'm alone
And the bed where you lie is made up on your side.

82. I've heard the warning voice from friends and my relations.
They tell me all about your heart-break reputation.

83. It seems so good to see you back again.
How long has it been?
Ooh, seems like a mighty long time.

84. I don't wanna know your name,
'Cause you don't look the same,
The way you did before.
Okay, you think you got a pretty face,
But the rest of you is out of place.
You looked alright before.

85. My girlfriend's run off with my car
And gone back to her ma and pa,
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty.

86. I walk along the street we used to walk.
Two by two, lovers pass
And as they're passing by, I could die
'Cause you're not here with me.

87. When he treats me rough and he acts as though he doesn't really care,
Well, I never tell him that he is so unfair.

88. I want to do it
'Til the sun comes up,
Uh huh,
And I want to do it
'Til I can't get enough.

The above lyric is so stupid, it makes the next one seem perfectly logical.

89. Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon?

90. Yeah, my momma she told me don't worry about your size.
She says boys, they like a little more booty to hold at night.

91. Singing his cowboy songs, he's just too much
He's got a knocked out western accent with a Harlem touch.
He was raised on loco weed.
He's what you call a swing half-breed.

”Back in the good old days, we didn’t have all these songs with drug references.”

92. Have you heard about the new dance craze?
Listen to us, I'm sure you'll be amazed.
Big fun to be had by everyone.
It's up to you, it surely can be done.

93. If I could hear the horns blow
Cynthia on the throne, yeah!
Cynthia and Jerry got a message that's sayin'
All the squares, go home!

94. It's like a wall of mirrors,
You charge `em at full speed,
You cover up - you hear the shattering glass,
But you never bleed,
You never feel the need.

95. I see your face before me
As I lay on my bed.
I kind of get to thinking
Of all the things you said.

96. She stripped to the beat but her clothes stay on,
White light everywhere but you can't see a thing.
Such a squeeze,
A mad sad moment,
Glory to you,
Glory to you,
Take me there,
Take me there.

97. The mountain is high, the valley is low
And you're confused on which way to go,
So I've come here to give you a hand
And lead you into the promised land.

98. When we were at school, our games were simple:
I played a janitor, you played a monitor,
Then you played with older boys and prefects
What's the attraction in what they're doing?

99. The landlord say your rent is late,
He may have to litigate.

100. Getting born in the state of Mississippi,
Her papa was a copper, and her mama was a hippie.
In Alabama she will swing a hammer,
Price you got to pay when you break the panorama.

101. I joke around at a party when you are there,
But you don't laugh, you don't look, you just don't care.

102. Funny how I find myself
In love with you.
If I could buy my reasoning,
I'd pay to lose.
One half won't do.

103. First time was a great time,
Second time was a blast,
Third time I fell in love,
Now I hope it lasts.

104. Me oh my,
Lucky guy is what I am.
Tell you why, you'll understand
She don'’t fly although she can.

105. You found a new world
And you want to taste it,
But that world can turn cold
And you better face it.

106. When I'm with you
I shake inside,
My heart's all tangled up,
My tongue is tied.

107. In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all,
The darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small.

108. I ain't got no money,
I ain't like those other guys you hang around,
And it's kinda funny
But they always seem to let you down.

109. Now maybe someday
I'll reach that higher goal.
I know I can make it
With just a little bit of soul.

110. They catch a cab to his high-rise apartment.
At last he can tell her exactly what his heart meant.

111. Thanks for takin' me
On a one-way trip to the sun,
And thanks for turnin' me
Into a someone.

112. Some fools think
Of happiness, blissfulness, togetherness,
Some fools fool themselves, I guess.
They're not foolin' me.
I know it isn't true, I know it isn't true.
Love is just a lie made to make you blue.

113. I see you every morning
Outside the restaurant,
The music plays so nonchalant.

114. I'm talking to myself in public,
Dodging glances on the train,
And I know, I know they've all been talking about me.

115. Rags to riches, or so they say,
Ya gotta keep pushin' for the fortune and fame,
You know it's all a gamble when it's just a game.

116. Your name and mine inside a heart upon a wall
Still finds a way to haunt me, though they're so small.

117. In school they all stop and stare,
I can't hide the tears, but I don't care.

118. Once the world was new.
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day.
We couldn't tear ourselves away.

119. He has a thousand dreams that won't come true.
You know that he believes in them and that's enough for you.

120. Fox the fox,
Rat the rat,
You can ape the ape,
I know about that.

121. Bells will ring, the sun will shine, whoa-oh-oh.
I'll be his and he'll be mine.
We'll love until the end of time
And we'll never be lonely anymore.

122. Whenever I'm alone with you,
You make me feel like I am free again.
Whenever I'm alone with you,
You make me feel like I am clean again.

123. And I swear that I don't have a gun,
No, I don't have a gun,
No, I don't have a gun.

I believe you. Please don’t hurt me.

124. Lily Belle, your hair is golden brown.
I've seen your black man comin' round.
Swear by God I'm gonna cut him down.
I heard screamin' and bullwhips cracking.
How long? How long?

And speaking in rebuttal –

125. Now, Watergate does not bother me.
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth.

4. I've been searching for the daughter of the devil himself,
I've been searching for an angel in white,
I've been waiting for a woman who's a little of both
And I can feel her, but she's nowhere in sight.

I don't know much about lyrics, but with 2 votes for Witchy Woman to 1 vote for One of These Nights, I've gotta say this is definitely One of These Nights.

I believe it should be ONE OF THOSE NIGHTS; I was mistaken when I posted originally.

I don't know much about lyrics, but with 2 votes for Witchy Woman to 1 vote for One of These Nights, I've gotta say this is definitely One of These Nights.
I believe it should be ONE OF THOSE NIGHTS; I was mistaken when I posted originally.
Yeah, as soon as I saw One of These Nights, I knew my guess of Witchy Woman was wrong.

It may be too early to speculate on the tangredi but Piltdown Man was a famous hoax - "discovered" in 1912 but not revealed as a hoax until 1953. The bones were discovered in England by Charles Dawson. Perhaps some of this information will have relevance down the road.

Re: Game #169: A Musical Salute to the Piltdown Man

Two songs on this consolidation have been misidentified, both because they contain phrases that are also in other songs. (Yes, believe it or not, there CAN be another song that uses that phrase....)

Two artists have also been misidentified. One has a question mark. The other has been attributed to an artist who is represented elsewhere in the game. (Once somebody recognizes #43 and kicks themselves, you'll know which.)
