What's the Alternative - Game

#1 Post by eyégor » Fri Jun 16, 2017 1:05 pm

There is no better way to avoid infringing on someone else's IP than to post something you ran in this space 8 years ago.

So live, on your screen , for the first time since 2009, is the game everyone dreaded, which is why the time before was in 2006, the game that lets you guess what music the troll is listening to at this time.

The rules are easy - standard LS rules apply - no bonuses, JFFs ore anything else. Just artist & title, 1 point each. Standard answer cloaking rates apply.

The last time this ran, Esto demolished the competition with a 5, so don't get discouraged.

Also, in lieu of a bonus, the 2nd half is the exact game I ran back in '09. Let's see if Estonut still remembers some of them.

You might also want to track down some of the tracks referenced here. There IS interesting music out there if you know where to look. (no Gomez, Perry or Beyoncé here)

Lyrics will be in the next post. Will probably run until about noon on Monday. Wifey has cataract surgery Tuesday.

I almost forgot. One of the first 12 songs was featured on a long awaited television event within the past month. Good Luck!

1. this cat starts banging man what a swine.
So I called reception but to no avail
That's why I'm telling you this sorry tale.
It went bang, I said shut up

2. About her blogs and her tweets
I'll tell you something
It ain't no mystery how your new best friend looks
In your eyes

3. Always got a teacup when she knocks upon my door
She just wants some milk and sugar, but all I want is her

4. You've got something that makes you something
something tells me loud and clear
In the end it comes to nothing
You've got nothing to eins zwei drei vier

5. Well I travel from Maine to Mexico
Just to find a little girl that'll love me so
No matter where, no matter where Ill be
I'm lookin' for a woman that'll satisfy me
(note: I am not looking for the East Coast Band that sometimes plays this)

6. Well, I want you, I love you, I need you so much
Why don't you give out with that magic touch
You send me, you thrill me, baby you're so fine
I want your lovin' baby all the time.

7. At night I'm driving in your car
Pretending that we'll leave this town
We're watching all the street lights fade
And now you're just a stranger's dream

8. She makes me wanna BLOW MY MONEY
She takin’ me deep in debt
I’d spend my last dollar
For one night in her kitchenette

9. Wind up fast pitch crash no dice
Won’t you see what’s in these eyes
Try try to tell you I’m wanting
Try try to formulate

10. Watching the sun hit the bottom
Of the evening sky
Another day over and tomorrow
In the bye and bye
Looking at the same stars you can see
Wherever you are

11. From Atlanta, Georgia to castle city, too
We gonna do Berlin, even a little Kalamazoo

12. I know that things can really get rough when you go it alone
Don't go thinking you gotta be tough, and bleed like a stone
Could be there’s nothing else in our lives, so critical
As this little home

13 She shoots but never misses
Stare down, passin’ traffic
Go carefully, carefully

14 You're a picture of the checkout girl
Hand me a plastic bag
I got the sweats trying to open it
As it all piles up
I wish I didn't bite my nails

15 Most of all, I’d like to thank you for accepting this collect call
And what you are about to hear is sincere
It’s not the drugs or the alcohol

16 I was walking down the street,
When out the corner of my eye
I saw a pretty little thing approaching me.
She said "I've never seen a man
Who looks so all alone,
Could you use a little company?

17 But I won't mind If you take me home
Come on, take me home
I won't mind if you take off all your clothes
Come on, take them off

18 Broken bottles in the doorway
and I've been thinking have it your way
Take the night train right to Jersey
I'll leave you broken, I'll leave you wealthy
oh these eyes

19 As you stand, under the bar lights.
And the band plays some song
about forgetting yourself for a while.
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack to her smile.
And that white dress she’s wearing
you haven’t seen her for a while.

20 We were born in the desert
We were reared in a cave
We conquered in the sun
but we lived in the shade
Yeah baby we were savage
we existed to kill
Our history is damaged
at least it was a thrill

21 I know, I know it's all just first blurts
That he who would try to own deserves it
And I know it's got nothing to do with deserves it
Just that you don't just blurt

22 Well she don't have her momma's hips yet
So she stole her momma's lipstick
And she knew that I was coming
And I think that I know why
She goes by Fiona
She seeks bad luck in omens
When she's free and when she's lonely
She comes beatin' at my door, singing:

23 Here’s a little story to bring a tear to your eye
I was shopping for a wetsuit to scuba dive
But every suit I tried is too big around the thighs
And the assistant suggested I try a ladies’ size

24 Ah, Live like it's the style
When we waltz on your front porch
We are all our-own devil
We are all our-own devil
We make this world our hell
Porcelain teacups decorate
Tables and the conversation
Beauty pageants, all the time
Is running out, the time is running out

I only got 5 less than the reigning champion. Not too shabby.

At first glance, I know ONE.
Spoiler
and that's because it's a remake of a 50's tune that I found on Spotify just TWO nights ago.

I'll come back later to spend more time with 'em.

OK, I got 2. I apparently breezed past #4 on my first runthrough yesterday. If I had missed it, I'd be pretty embarrassed considering my self-declared Beatle expertise

4. You've got something that makes you something

Goose Step Mama-The Rutles

6. Well, I want you, I love you, I need you so much

Lotta Lovin'-well, up until a couple of days ago, the only answer I could've given you was Gene Vincent, who had a hit with it back in 19waytoolongagotowannathinkaboutit. But then I stumbled across a recent recording of this by Jeff Beck, so I'm guessing that might be the artist you are looking for.

I'm caught looking for strike 3 on the rest of 'em.

I see that I have scared people away with my musical tastes. So be it. I just hope those of you who are checking the answers follow the youtube links and possibly discover some tunes that are aren't corporate pop or classic rock.

1. Wot - Captain Sensible
I have always liked this song. Of course, the Captain seems to have had only one song in his bag of tunes, because it seems the rest of his career has been based solely on this minor hit. Sensible I guess.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pqC563bX_w

2. That Girl - The Noisettes
This song, and the one before it, is proof that you really need to keep an eye on the lower regions of the British pop charts to find interesting and satisfying music. This is a favorite of mine and 3 of my 4 daughters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyEo8M42Qn4

3. Blue Collar Jane – The Strypes
This is an example of what is being produced by those out there that refuse to accept that Rock is dead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZb8nEemK2k

4. Goose Step Mama – The Rutles
I have always loved the Rutles. Even the Beatles loved the Rutles. Unfortunately, the only place you can still hear them is on The Underground Garage on Sirius & XM ch. 21. This is where I initially found several of these songs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56iF9TmuaE8

5. Have Love Will Travel – The Sonics
The Sonics are quite possibly the best Rock & Roll band that nobody ever heard of. This song is from 1965 but still sounds as fresh as anything produced today. They made the mistake of being from Seattle, not Manchester. The answer i wouldn't accept is Bruce Springsteen, who plays it occasionally while touring, but I would have accepted the Black Keys who recorded a version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20S_kwNb4rg

6. Lotta Lovin’ - Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps
T-Bone was right on this one. I was looking for Gene Vincent. I have one daughter who, when she bums a ride from me always commandeers the radio and goes to first wave or 50's music. I wasn't aware of the Jeff Beck version. But I recommend the new Jeff Beck album (with an unknown female as lead vocal) from the few cuts I've heard from it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqz5vU0EaYE

7. Shadow – The Chromatics
This is the TV song. it is performed on the second part of "Twin Peaks - The Return" and sounds like it was written by David Lynch. The video even looks like it was recorded in the black lodge. The band is a spawned by something called "Italo Disco" this band is my new infatuation. And the lead singer never smiles. Never.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGUboLZx3Tk

8. Sucker For Love – The Bayonets
Another find from the Underground Garage it is interesting to note the the band's leader is the son of Jerry Lieber of the renowned 50's songwriting duo Lieber & Stoller. Stand by me indeed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVLUw7xy2RU

9. Babbling Idiot – The Dollyrots
This is from the Dollyrots 6th album, released in March. My question is, how do you put out 6 albums in this day & age if no one has heard of you. Except me. I know I listen to too much radio in the car because I am getting sick of hearing this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cXsQ42LOZs

10. Living in the Song – Blackberry Smoke
Exibit A for the case that Southern Rock is not completely dead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h66_DFkYMv4

11. Land of the Freak – King Kahn & the Shrines
This song is a little older than some of those above (no not you Gene). Drew Carey has said that they are the best band ever to see live. Unfortunately, they are out of Berlin and rarely come to the States. They did play some of the big music festivals a few years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDmxHDx0SBQ

12 Simple Song – The Shins
This is about as mainstream as I got with the first 12 songs. I included them because they played in Cooperstown and over the weekend. And I like the song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoLTPcD1S4Q

I am going to leave the '09 comments and put new comments in red

13 Airstream Driver - GomezI lied when I said no Gomez. Of course I
1)hadn't planned on posting these next 12 when I wrote it and
2) meant Selena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-NWJ9OykJs

14 The Great Defector - Bell X1 I really like this song.Unfortunately this Irish band seems to have vanished
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfYoK7_DYyU

15 Sinner - Big B(featuring Scott Russo of Unwritten Law)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=borwYU3GEb4

16 Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest for the Wicked
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKtsdZs9LJo

17 I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked - Ida Mariathe singer is Norwegian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkVy2FeqIyc

18 the Phone Down - Pilot SpeedI had totally forgotten about this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6-cZstYgCU

19 Sometime Around Midnight - Airborne Toxic EventThis is one of the few songs I was able to find on YouTube back in '09. I changed the link anyway because the old one is probably broken
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYPoMjR6-Ao

20 Now We Can See - The Thermals For you Chuck fans, this is the song playing when Chuck & Casey were marching to Emmet's office to quit. This was my granddaughters favoritr song in '09
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJu611UdfxA

21 Love is a First - The Tragically Hip Thank God for Canada's domestic product broadcasting laws.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpdLeR5k44o

22 The Future's Nothing New - Alternate Routes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBMBvsxWqNk

23 Hurt Feelings - Flight of the Conchords This is the only song not yet released for sale in the US. It should be on their new, upcoming CD.Interestingly, this was the only other song I found a YouTube link for back then
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuJzSTNDUGI

24 Oscar Wilde - Company of Thieves I'm still not sure if I like this one or not.The jury is back. Not a favorite
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_slOp6yhjQ

So there you have it. Estonut more than doubled his score to 12 and remains champion. Back in the day Corn usually came out on top. Anyone know how things are for her & her 'ear'?

Post back here if you find something you like. It will help me decide if I will do this again before 2025.

OK, I will.

I already knew the Rutles and Gene Vincent songs, and actually have the Blackberry Smoke album with this track, but I haven't listened to it enough at this point for any lyrics to be imbedded in my brain yet. A couple of these were "okay", but these were the ones I really liked:

Never.

A perfect song for Twin Peaks. I guess the singer feels that, when ya look like she does, ya don't HAVE TO smile...

8. Sucker For Love – The Bayonets
Another find from the Underground Garage it is interesting to note the the band's leader is the son of Jerry Lieber of the renowned 50's songwriting duo Lieber & Stoller. Stand by me indeed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVLUw7xy2RU

The guitarist is Brian Ray, who has been in Paul McCartney's band for some time now. I have a solo album by him, but had no knowledge of this group's existence.

12 Simple Song – The Shins
This is about as mainstream as I got with the first 12 songs. I included them because they played in Cooperstown and over the weekend. And I like the song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoLTPcD1S4Q

know a little about the band, didn't know the song.

Not crazy about the lead vocal, but the chord and singalong "oh-way-ohooh-whoahoo" hooks are not to be denied. PowerPop Rules!
