Washington Generals Return ... Lose Again

After a two-year absence, the new look Washington Generals returned to genuinely competitive basketball yesterday, but the results were the same, another loss extending a 46-year losing streak. The Generals served as foils for the Harlem Globetrotters for decades, but the Trotters dropped them as an opponent, and their new opponents are called the World All-Stars (who are also winless against the Trotters).

Earlier this year, however, the Generals (formerly owned by the family of Red Klotz, their longtime coach), were purchased by Herschend Entertainment, which also owns the Trotters. Former NBA star Kenny Smith helped the team assemble a roster and they entered a summer event called The Basketball Tournament, a $2 million winner-take-all tournament for non-NBA players, featuring 64 teams from around the world. The Generals were given the ninth seed in the South Region and matched against the Matadors, a team of former Texas Tech players. Although the Generals led several times during the game, they eventually lost 76-72.

Their only consolation is that they will soon return to their usual status of Harlem Globetrotter opponents later this summer.
