TEN!, Week Five, Wednesday

#1 Post by Pastor Fireball » Wed Jul 12, 2017 3:45 pm

Since the Bored is scared of culture, let's force some culture on everybody with our next category.

BOOKS & STORIES

I could have said "Literature", but that's too big of a word for people like Estonut to comprehend. Besides, I didn't want to limit myself to just published works. There's also a little bit of folklore and mythology in here. Deadline is Thursday at 5:30 PM Eastern.

1. In the Harry Potter book series, which of the following is the name of an oft-cited tabloid newspaper?
A. "The Prattler"
B. "The Mucker"
C. "The Yakker"
D. "The Quibbler"

2. Where was "Othello" set?
A. Cyprus
B. Sicily
C. Crete
D. Malta

3. In the fable of the tortoise and the hare, which animal judged the race?
A. Owl
B. Cat
C. Fox
D. Pig

4. In James Hilton's 1934 book "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", what subjects did Mr. Chipping teach?
A. Latin and Greek
B. Drama and music
C. Chemistry and physics
D. Algebra and calculus

5. SPOILER ALERT! Which of the March sisters dies near the end of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women"?
A. Amy
B. Beth
C. Jo
D. Meg

6. What is the only breed of dog explicitly mentioned in the Bible?
A. Saluki
B. Mastiff
C. Sheepdog
D. Greyhound

7. Robin Hood was allegedly a real person called the Earl of what?
A. Huntingdon
B. Portsmouth
C. Gloucester
D. Bristol

8. "The One and Only Ivan" was a 2012 bestseller about a unique painter. Who or what was Ivan?
A. A 110-year-old man
B. A gorilla
C. A 3-year-old girl
D. A dolphin

9. Mercifully, this novel had nothing to do with Chris Hardwick's crap game show or honking slack-jawed sphincterlips Donald Drumpf's crap project. John Hersey's 1950 novel "The Wall" was set in what country?
A. Canada
B. Poland
C. South Africa
D. China

BONUS: Coming in at about 600,000 words, what is the one-word title of the 2016 Alan Moore novel that is #10 on the list of longest English-language novels of all-time?
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)

1. In the Harry Potter book series, which of the following is the name of an oft-cited tabloid newspaper?
A. "The Prattler"
B. "The Mucker"
C. "The Yakker"
D. "The Quibbler"

The number one source of disinformation for Ravenclaw student Luna Lovegood, whose father is the editor-in-chief.

2. Where was "Othello" set?
A. Cyprus
B. Sicily
C. Crete
D. Malta

3. In the fable of the tortoise and the hare, which animal judged the race?
A. Owl
B. Cat
C. Fox
D. Pig

But had FOX News judged the race, they would have claimed the hare won.

4. In James Hilton's 1934 book "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", what subjects did Mr. Chipping teach?
A. Latin and Greek
B. Drama and music
C. Chemistry and physics
D. Algebra and calculus

5. SPOILER ALERT! Which of the March sisters dies near the end of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women"?
A. Amy
B. Beth
C. Jo
D. Meg

6. What is the only breed of dog explicitly mentioned in the Bible?
A. Saluki
B. Mastiff
C. Sheepdog
D. Greyhound

"There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; a greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up." --Proverbs 30:29-31

7. Robin Hood was allegedly a real person called the Earl of what?
A. Huntingdon
B. Portsmouth
C. Gloucester
D. Bristol

Anthony Munday made the first claim back in 1598. About 150 years later, William Stukeley claimed that Robin Hood was born Robert Fitzooth.

8. "The One and Only Ivan" was a 2012 bestseller about a unique painter. Who or what was Ivan?
A. A 110-year-old man
B. A gorilla
C. A 3-year-old girl
D. A dolphin

The book was inspired by a real gorilla who was kept in captivity at a mall in Tacoma, WA, for 27 years.

D. China

Although Hersey was born in China, the book was about the Warsaw Ghetto set up by the Nazis.

BONUS: Coming in at about 600,000 words, what is the one-word title of the 2016 Alan Moore novel that is #10 on the list of longest English-language novels of all-time?

Jerusalem

In case you're wondering, the longest English-language novel of all-time is Samuel Richardson's 1748 work Clarissa, or, The History of a Young Lady--estimated at about 984,000 words. And that book is only #9 on the list of longest novels of any language. The honor of longest novel of all-time goes to a French novel called Men of Goodwill by Jules Romains--estimated to have over two million words.
