RIP Frank Broyles

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Mon Aug 14, 2017 4:15 pm

Long-time football coach and athletic director at the University of Arkansas. Ironically, he's best remembered for the game he didn't win, a 15-14 loss to Texas in 1969 when both teams were unbeaten, a game billed as the "Game of the Century." Before his coaching days, Broyles was a star quarterback at Georgia Tech.

Age 92.

Interesting note that the award for best college football assistant coach of the years is named after Broyles (his assistants included Barry Switzer, Joe Gibbs, Jimmie Johnson, and Johnny Majors). Last year the Broyles Award went to Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

The Broyles Award is one of four major college football postseason awards named after people associated with the Georgia Tech football program:

Heisman Trophy (best college player of the year - 2016 Lamar Jackson Louisville)
Bobby Dodd Award (best head coach of the year - 2016 Mike MacIntyre Colorado)
Homer Rice Award (career award for athletic directors - 2016 Mike McGee South Carolina, Southern Cal)
